Run a frequency sweep through the speakers. If you're familiar with the "sound" of a 20-20K Hz frequency glide that can tell you right away if something is "missing", "peculiar", etc. Also, run the sweep on a per channel/speaker basis. I would think it highly unusual that you would have the same problem with both speakers.

They sure do. It is possible, since the tweeter is SO robust, that a crossover component could have been damaged and the tweeter could have survived. Depends on what kind of signal it received that led to the damage (IF there is any, of course). Although not usual for "failures", we do see lots of pairs of speakers with the same "damage", obviously due to a situation that effected both speakers.

Although harder to replace (they are located behind the upper active woofer), and often not showing signs of obvious damage, the crossovers may be less expensive to replace than the tweeters.

Hmm, these two tweeter pictures are the exact same picture. Also, did you ever swap the phase of one of the speakers as a test?
7.1 today, moving to 7.1.4 tomorrow
