On a more positive note: Inspired by the many interesting comments in this thread regarding speaker placement and sound stage, I decided to relocate my Triton Ones in my room. I pulled them out further from the front back wall of my room (actually a front wall filled with open book shelves, loaded with books and bric-a-brac). They're now sitting closer to my PLP and about 4 feet away from the book shelves.

Also, they are a bit further apart - now sitting about 3 feet away from the side walls and about nine feet apart. My PLP (head position) is about 10.5 feet away from each speaker and centered between the two speakers - almost an equilateral triangle.

I have aimed the speakers to focus at a point slightly behind my head in the PLP. The effect was surprising. If I close my eyes and listen to two-channel stereo symphonic music, the sound seems to be suspended in the air in front of me between the two speakers.

I also am using two Altec Lansing Boleros as side speakers and two Triton Sevens as rear speakers, each pair driven by a separate amplifier and set up as fronts. I have re-positioned the Sevens a bit further away from the back wall and they sit about 2 feet from the side walls. I have angled them to point a bit outwards - away from my PLP.

Cool stuff - rediscovering my music while engaged in a truly massive new project. I am converting my entire CD collection to digital files and storing them on an external 3 TB HD so that I can play them through a Peachtree stand-alone DAC I recently purchased. I am using Musichi software for this conversion and cataloger.

Perhaps I'll live long enough to complete this conversion project.

Happy Listening to All,

Art

Art,

I'm glad you found a zero cost and easy to implement upgrade to your sound. Proper placement is huge and I'm surprised we had not discussed that previously. Good luck getting that massive CD collection transferred inbetween your busy schedule. I'm wishing you countless hours of listening enjoyment to your digital library and new DAC. I look forward to additional updates.

Cheers,

T Cobe

Hi T. Cobe,

Yes, I'm enjoying my "new" setup. My Peachtree DAC has USB, Optical and Digital Coax Inputs. When I eventually have all my music on the Seagate HD, I will dedicate a computer of some kind to act as a player and controller for the files. Connection to the DAC will be via USB from the computer (the player will likely be the software player that is a part of the Musichi Suite I am using to rip and catalog music).

But, for now, since I cannot listen to my Peachtree DAC while ripping and cataloging, I have connected the DAC to one of my Sony 5-CD DVD/CD Changers via an optical cable. I playing CDs through the new DAC using the player in the Changer.

Fun with audio and music.

honashagen wrote: Things didn't just go bad. It takes time to realize the Tritons may not be for me. I hate that! This was the most I ever spent on speakers. I was going by all the reviews not my ears. If you dig around you find other people that feel the mids are veiled or subdued. I'm not the only one. I started to notice I wasn't hearing inside the music. There was not enough "air" around things. The reverb whether natural or added was harder to hear. Pipes in a pipe organ didn't "speak" anymore. I know it's hard to consider that I may just be hearing what's missing. Everyone will probably move on to other speakers someday. We all do. Damn, I wish I could hear one of your systems. Wish you could hear mine.

Hi, honashagen

I don't doubt you are hearing things you aren't totally happy with. It's just that what you are describing is SO different from what I have experienced. Lack of air, midrange being veiled... I appreciate your frustration with your set-up. If I were to describe what I hear from my GEt speakers, it's more like "clarity, richness, clean bass, extraordinary detail...".

I have no idea what is going on in your set-up. I think the Moderator Dude's point that there may be something weird going on in your speakers or set-up is worth pursuing. The sound you are describing just doesn't register with me as what GEt speakers deliver.

Maybe it's worth talking to your dealer about ways to test what's going on.

Even more! I know you are all sick of this but here goes.
Contacted Goldenear tech support and they think the tweeters may be damaged just like someone said in the very beginning of all of this. They told me to look at them carefully and check for discoloration and a distorted looking ribbon. I HOPE THERE IS! They cost $150 each to replace but it would be worth it. I can also send them in for diagnosis if they look ok. I'm hoping!

Frankly I hope that's it. I'm not sure what you paid used but I'm guessing even if you have to replace the tweeters you'll still come out ahead.
