WayneWilmeth wrote: Hi Guys,
I may be a little lost. Not sure if it is this thread or the cables thread where we were discussing playing movies
like MI 5 Rogue Nation LOUD?
Anyway, I finally got my own copy of the BR and got the old SPL meter out, played the motorcycle scene and got it up to 100 dB peaks, not continuous. It was at -5 on my XMC-1 down from "reference" and it was WAY, WAY, WAY too loud!!!!!
IF that is what you normally listen at Bro Anthem, then I am guessing you have a lot of hearing loss, more than I do.
Or, IF not, you soon will have, I am thinking.
And YES, I understand those kinds of levels can stress you speakers/system.
I turned it back down to what I consider "loud-but-fun, the family is not at home to yell at me to turn it down" level, and that was in the 85-90 dB range. Seems I never listen up to or certainly not past 95 dB.
Maybe we are measuring this differently???? I was actually in the same room, at my Fav LP while playing it that loud!! Perhaps you were outside????? OR perhaps you are just guessing at how loud you listen and not actually measuring???
God Bless,
Wayne

When I set the volume for my best listening preference, the SL meter was showing temporary peaks at about 90-91 db in the loudest action scenes, quieter dialogue scenes in the 70's db's. I was pretty impressed with the SQ in that range. Whatever works, I guess....

Thanks Rick, that is roughly the same as my listening volumes.
I just got a new batch of movies, and I would be willing to bet that back in the States, some of them would
be Atmos movies, because I noticed that all the big movies were Dolby TrueHD 7.1 and NOT DTS. This is a never before
situation, I always am listening to DTS, but only once or twice before have the movies been Dolby, and those are the ones
you guys comment on as Atmos. But as I said, Atmos does not come up as an option.
I will watch them and report accordingly.
I believe I reported on "The Walk" before, well we watched it again tonight, as the wife had bought it again in 3D this time.
I am sure it was not originally filmed in 3D as there was absolutely NO 3D content to be seen at all. We all finally took off our
glasses, there was NO difference.
The film is pretty boring except for just the audacity of the true story, and the SQ was not noticeable.
Watched "Exodus, Gods and Kings" last night as a friend wanted to see and hear a movie in 3D in my home theater. She was duly
truly BLOWN AWAY by both the awesome sound and the awesome 3D picture!!!! Another friend was here and talked her into it, he said he had seen 3D movies in the IMAX before and they did not compare to my home theater!!!! She agreed.
Man this Hobby is FUN!!!!!

This is an interesting aside Wayne.

I feel like we quote these reference numbers based on movie theaters. However, at -15dB at home I'm usually LOUDER than most commercial theaters. Probably the reference numbers we quote are in the front row of the theater where no one sits. Sound drops off 6dB per doubling of distance, that's physics. So if you're sitting 30 feet from the screen, its quieter.

On topic, I watched AntMan. It wasn't as good as I expected. The plot was very simplistic and there wasn't a lot of character development. But then on the other side it wasn't as funny or irreverent as say Deadpool looks like it will be. PQ and sound were very good IMO.

Thanks, Good point Imahawki,
I know that "reference" is from theater sound level, but I can tell you that my system at -5 reference, there is no way in heck
I have ever heard anything at my SEAT that loud in a theater in my life!!!!!
Probably the theater speakers were playing that loud, a long way away, but never that loud at my listening seat.
Good point, thanks for sharing here. I just got Ant Man, will report on it when I get around to watching it.

Boys, Boys, Boys

Don't get all "John Wayne" on me. Anthem doesn't listen to all movies this loudly, just movies such as the Terminator series, Mission Impossible, Transformers, The Mummy, Resident Evil, King Kong, The Dark Knight, Spiderman, Gravity, Kung-fu Panda, Bolt, Thor, 007, Aeonflux,The Incredibles, Open Range, Blade, X-Men, Iron Man...when I'm with the wife watching her Romantic comedies, we listen at regular levels...(-25) - (-15)...

Remember, if I meet you on the street, please use Sign Language because I don't hear well.

Every great performance deserves an Audience!
