Oddly enough, I played trombone for a short time in elementary and middle school before I switched to choir. I stuck with choir all through high school. Oddly enough, I never learned how to read music and always learned by ear. Maybe that's when I learned how to listen.

Cheers,

T Cobe

OK a retired airline Captain buddy of mine came over this aft. and spent hours with me, he wanted to hear Chris Stapleton, "Traveller" which I was happy to oblige. And he wanted to see "Dr. Zhivago" which I was also happy to watch with him.
We were bemoaning the loss of the great actor Omar Sharif.
We were swooning over how beautiful Julie Christie was (is???)
We were awed by the music of Maurice Jarre!!!!!!
We were blown away by the beautiful scenes and artistic direction of David Lean.
We were enthralled by how many GREAT actors are in this movie, Rod Steiger topping them all!!!!!!
This is a tour de force of movie making, one of the greatest movies of all times, IMHO.
NOTE: this review is of the Anniversary edition which I purchased even though I have it on DVD, it was WORTH IT!!!!!!
PQ on this blu-ray is only SLIGHTLY dated, almost awesome still.
SQ is by way of DTS-HD MA 5.1 and serves the score and soundtrack, the total audio experience. The opening notes of the Overture which plays while everyone is still finding their seats, bounce back and forth between the two sides of the room, delicious.
IF you haven't seen this movie in a while, or on blu-ray, you really ought to take an evening and ENJOY!!!!!!!!
God Bless,
Wayne

One of the, maybe the longest symphony that normally gets played, 90 to 100 mins, with 6 movements, the first one is around 30 mins long and it is AWESOME, POWERFUL!!!!!!!
The dynamic range is great, you need to turn this up for the quiet parts but hold on to your seat when the full power orchestra comes on!!!!!
Once again, Claudio Abbado leading the wonderful Lucerne Festival Orchestra (so many in it are soloists elsewhere) in a fantastic blu-ray.
DTS-HD MA5.1 superb sound, this has a big orchestra, a Alto soloist and a full women's and boy's choirs.
The first majestic movement makes the best use I have ever heard in classical music of the trombone, WOW!!!!!
Even IF you don't like to hear that fat lady sing the opera, this Alto soloist is an amazing singer, PURE and not way up there thrilling and warbling like some sopranos, this is just what it needs to be. The choirs are great. The last movement is FULL ON POWER & BEAUTY!!!!
At the end of it all, the Maestro has been so moved by the performance he is visibly moved and doesn't even turn around for the audience for the longest time to take a bow.
I am a beginner at this stuff, so I google the sym and read the wikipedia notes, which help a LOT.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this symphony, this performance and this disc.
God Bless,
Wayne

Well, Wayne, I just finished listening/watching over three sessions...

It took me a bit to "get into" this, but boy, was it worth it! Majestic, moving, hauntingly beautiful at times.

I continue to be amazed at Claudio Abbado's mastery of the music. Again, no score in front of him. Soloists do this all the time, but for a conductor, who needs to keep track of what, maybe a hundred instruments are supposed to be doing???? All in his head??? An entire concerts' worth?? Highly unusual. Genius at work.

Abbado was clearly moved at the end, as you said. You could just see the emotion in his face.

What a masterful performance by all! And Mahler's music is indeed grand.
