T Cobe wrote: Thanks again, Moderator Dude! Rick and Mr. Gross both seem to agree that the Atmos processing is outstanding for music. I trust both of their opinions implicitly. Unfortunately, I'm not quite there yet. It's probably going to be a while before I am able to implement Atmos. I wish I had a local dealer with an Atmos setup so I could hear the results first hand. Someday...

Hey, T Cobe

Re ATMOS set-ups, unfortunately they are few and far between. All I can tell you is that the effect of height speakers is both subtle, and beyond that, it just plain adds a "top of the sound envelope" effect that grabs attention.

I too couldn't audition a full ATMOS set up. I guess it takes a leap of faith. I'm sure glad I made it. I LOVE my 5.2.4 system!!!!!

Happy listening!

Thanks Guys for all the input.
Bro Rick, I agree with you that the surround on the Beethoven Symphonies is so much more satisfying than the stereo.
Bro T. I will try giving it a bit more bass when I try stereo next time, I don't feel I am missing any bass, but will try it since you suggest it.
Art, I think the discussion of All Stereo is mostly an overall dissatisfaction on your part and most of our parts with Poor Old Stereo, it is just not immersive and involving enough.
However, I don't really want to turn this thread into a discussion of All Stereo and for sure, not of Dolby Atmos (Lord knows Dolby and those working for him are GENIUS!!!!).
When I tried All Stereo, it was slightly more involving, but let me just say, I am not convinced.
I WILL pay up to 4-5 times more for a well recorded surround version of good music over POS, and in my home theater, surround is the way to go.
But I don't feel any need for more than the 7.1 I have now. Try that "Souvenir" blu-ray I wrote about. The sound is up and over and all around!!!! Eight speakers in my home theater are enough!!!!!
Thanks Guys, more later.
God Bless,
Wayne

I want to audition the Triton Ones more, much more. But it is so damn hot!!!!
It is still summer here in Thailand for some reason, it has not cooled off really. AND my TV is a 64 inch Plasma, only a Sammy but it has a GREAT pic, I just could not ask for better!!!!! But it runs HOT!!! And then all the amps with tubes and BIG heat sinks, HOT!!!!
And my A/C is broken in my home theater, I cannot get anybody to come fix it. Well, some kids from the shop came twice now, and have not managed to fix it yet.
Makes me want to be a good boy, I don't want to go to the HOT place!!!!
God Bless,
Wayne

A quick read on the Dolby Atmos website strongly implies to me that Atmos is aimed squarely at immersive theater sound for movies. Their example is the sound of a helicopter passing overhead, rather than just moving from left to right or front to rear. They state that Atmos effects can be had in several ways - overhead speakers, Atmos-rated speakers which direct some sound upward, or Atmos sound bars which also provide the ceiling effects. Plus, an Atmos-enabled AV receiver is required.

For me to enable Atmos, I would need to replace my receiver and add a sound bar or ceiling speakers. Ceiling speakers would be very difficult to add to my downstairs listening room, so I would probably need to default to a sound bar to add the overhead sound effects.

With all due respect to Sandy, I don't believe that enabling Atmos would improve my concert-hall listening experience for classical music. If action movies were my main audio interest, I can see how Atmos would be a valuable upgrade. But, for listening to music (classical, traditional jazz, and so-called "easy listening"), I can't become excited about Atmos. I have speakers in front of me, to the side, and in the rear, along with the Triton One subs and two additional subs to smooth the bass signals around the room. I have balanced these speakers to provide immersive audio in my PLP, while retaining the sense that the music source is in front of me.

After trying out a large number of speaker placements and various methods of driving those speakers, plus many listening modes, I have probably finally concluded that multiple-channel stereo provides the best sound in my situation, for listening to music.

Bravo to everyone who is looking into all of these options and reporting upon their findings. Audio perfection is truly in the ear of the listener.

Well, if you can't hear it for yourself (which is obviously the best way to determine if there is merit), give Sandy a call at the office and he'll be glad to explain why he feels it does based on his actual listening experience (which included plenty of classical material).

Thanks for the kind invitation to discuss Atmos with Sandy. He has certainly been helpful on the couple of previous conversations I have had with him related to GE products.

I am very interested in Sandy's thoughts, especially as relates to classical music, so I will likely give him a call very soon.

Best,

Art
