Welcome to the forum! Great choice in equipment. Regardless of room size, I bet it sounds great. Are you using your Oppo as the CD player?

Giving the T1s a little more room to breathe won't hurt but it sounds like that will work itself out in due time. In the meantime, the only recommendation I would provide is to play with the toe in angle. You may get a tad better imaging with the towers pointed directly at your primary listening position.

What else do you use their room for; gaming, home theater, etc? Any plans for surround sound or additional upgrades? Looks like a nice man cave. I look forward to hearing and seeing more. Congrats on the purchase! I've had my T1s for a few months and they still blow me away. Make sure you budget for some music to play on your new setup. Digital music is great but the T1s will reward you for seeking out some high quality recordings on disc. Happy listening!

Cheers,

T Cobe

Hi T Cobe,

Thanks for the comments. Yep, I'm using the Oppo 103 for all disk duties but I've copied most of my CDs to my iTunes library in the form of ALAC (lossless), and I access the library through the Apple TV. So the Oppo is mostly for Bluray concerts.

Regarding toe-in angles, I have experimented a little since I got them a week ago. I found that for now, if I followed the manual regarding toe-in angle, I get a small amount of harshness in the higher treble region with the tweeter pointed right at me. This could easily be the room (small room and speakers close to those big bare hard walls).

But I was wondering if it is because the speakers haven't fully worn in with 20 hours of use yet? Having said that, I've only found this brightness on only a handful of recordings so it could easily be those recordings. But I was wondering if you guys noticed the treble softened (if that's even the right word lol) after a longer period of use? The manual does say the treble becomes sweeter but not sure if that's the same as what I'm talking about? Would love to hear your thoughts.

The speakers are slightly toed in (hard to tell from the photo) to avoid them being totally parallel with the walls but still nowhere near the manual's recommended angle (with axes crossing just a tad behind the listeners head). But the angle I have them at for now does soften the treble ever so slightly (the off axis performance of these speakers is so good) and I still get quite good stereo imaging.

I've only had them a week, so will do some more adjustments after I've had them a month. But the system is sounding great (to me at least lol).

Regarding future additions/upgrades, that is a resounding but very respectful no lol. I previously had a 5.2.4 with 5 x KEF LS50s and 2 x SVS-SB2000's and a Pioneer SC-LX88 system in this same room (had some Atmos speakers for about a month too). I did love this system but I listened to music 95% of the time, so most of the speakers did nothing most of the time. So I sold everything with the goal to simply to a big bad 2-channel system. And here I am lol. It's doing a great job for TV and movies on the odd occasion I'm watching something, with a phantom center channel doing the job for voicing. I did hear these speakers with a Naim Supernait 2 and Hicap 2 and it did sound even better than what I have (about as good as anything I've ever heard actually) but it was out of my budget, so that may be possibly the only upgrade I might do over the next 3 years or so. The Peachtree really does get me 95% of the way there in my opinion for much less pain on the wallet. The system might even get me closer to that sound in a larger room where they can breathe as you say.

I do plan to add a turntable system and start getting LP's down the track ! Maybe when the bank account has recovered lol.

But I fully agree with what you say and can't wait to let these bad boys breathe when they move into a larger room (hopefully in a few months).

Nice pics of a very nice room and setup!!!!
That does not look like a man cave to me, looks like you have someone doing your decorating!!!!!
T. Cobe has given some good suggestions and asked some good questions.
I am looking forward to hearing from you what you hear with the Triton Ones and Peachtree?
I am betting it will be a REALLY sweet sounding system!
I agree with T. that you need to feed a real high quality signal to such a wonderful, revealing system, but I don't think it necessarily needs to be albums or even analog. But hi-res recordings of one sort or another will pay big dividends because you will be able to hear the difference with such great speakers.
Oh, heck, just put on some music and enjoy!!!!!! And don't be a stranger here,
Happy listening, God Bless,
Wayne

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for the comments. Completely agree with both you and T Cobe - the higher quality the recording the better it sounds on this system. But I'm already loving it !

Would love to get your thoughts too, regarding the treble after say 100 hours of breaking in. Did you notice any 'softening'? As I said, it could easily be my room and just those handful of less-than-stellar recordings.

Cheers again guys. Happy to be part of the GE club! :-)

Will share the experiences as I go through this initial running-in period.

EM84,

Thanks for the reply. If you're toe in angle has things sounding right to you, then that's the right answer. It's your money, your room, and your ears. Enjoyment is what it is really all about and I'm sure it is a great sounding setup.

You may want to look at some acoustic treatments for the side walls to treat the reflections. That may be your issue with the treble and the size of the room may make the reflections a bigger issue. Placing something on the side walls to treat this common issue may be just what the doctor ordered. There are a lot of low cost solutions on-line. A few hundred dollars may very well fix you up completely.

My treble has been mostly unchanged since owning my T1s. The bass may have changed a bit but they sounded sweet from the first minute of play time. I'm giddy as a school girl every time I get to listen to them! I was listening to Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live from Radio City Music Hall today in 2-channel and was amazed at just how rich the sound was. With just 2 speakers, I felt like I was sitting in the audience. The T1s are amazing! Congrats again on the new setup. Good job on trading in all your equipment to fund the upgrade.

I would recommend trying the analog outputs on your Oppo to your Peachtree and playing your CDs that way. Try this setup on a few of your best recordings and let me know if you hear a difference. I think you will be surprised at the depth and richness that the actual disc has when played through your analog outputs on the Oppo. This is the way I feed my pre-amp and it provides the best sound I have been able to achieve.

Cheers,

T Cobe

I am running my Triton Ones in a strictly 2 channel system. It is decent high end system with an all tube preamp, 150wpc power amp, sacd player, computer based audio, etc. I found the Triton Ones treble to be a little aggressive at times when I first got them. That all disappeared after about 40 hours and now it is smooth as silk and very sweet sounding. Give it time, I guess the pleated ribbon needs time to loosen up or something. I used an Isotek burn in cd while my wife and I were at work. After a week of this, the speakers really opened up and now they always sound superb.
Technics SL1200G TT with ZU DL103,, McIntosh c2500 all tube Preamp, Sony HAP-Z1ES Music Server, Esoteric UX-3 CD/SACD Player, McIntosh MR88 FM HD Tuner, McIntosh MC302 300wpc amp, GE Triton Reference Speakers, Shunyata Hydra's Power Conditioners & Power Cords, + more.

Good one guys, we are getting some great discussion here.
Thanks EM84 for adding to this discussion and asking great questions. You seem quite knowledgeable in your discussion, so I can see you are not a noob, and I like how you have decided what system is best for you and gone for it!!!
I don't have the Triton Ones, my T 2s are not harsh in the treble, or any other region at all. Break-in may help, toe in and room correction or room treatment may help, but EM you will be moving them to have more breathing room soon anyway, so that and break-in will most certainly solve your problem/question.
Stereo5 that is a very good and helpful answer. Tubes are a great way to get sweet sound too. I have them in limited quantity in my hybrid amps. Sweet AND powerful!!!! But not to sweet, not syrupy!!!
T. Cobe, that is a great suggestion to try the analog outs on the Oppo, that is where the Oppo 95 and 105 really shine. I don't know how the 103 will be? IF using the DAC in the Peachtree, I cannot imagine it being behind the Oppo in sound quality. But it is worth checking out.
Please everyone keep reporting back, this is good stuff!
Happy listening,
God Bless,
Wayne

Hey stereo5. Thanks for the reply. Yep aggressive is also how I would describe the higher frequencies on a few tracks, but that was with a brand new speaker and brand new amp. Looking forward to any potential improvements that come with breaking-in, but very happy with the results already. I’ll take any further improvements as a hidden bonus :-)

Hi T Cobe, yes I’m almost at the stage where I can finally sit back and just enjoy the music without worrying about adjustments/additions/upgrades. Just waiting on some power cables to arrive and then that should be it (hopefully! lol).

I definitely don’t have any issues with the bass in this small up-stairs room, that’s for sure lol. In fact, I’ve now just turned it down to about 9-o’clock just so I can turn the amp volume up a bit more (to get the mid range drivers and tweeter going a bit louder). After a couple of weeks I’ll go back to 11 o’clock for the Triton One subwooders, which sounded great up to now.

I actually did try using RCA cables from the Oppo to the Peachtree. I guess both have really good DACs and quality overall circuitry, that my ears couldn’t see a major difference but I will try again after this break-in period is over.

I have this same Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Blurary concert. I last heard it on my LS50/LX88 system. Can’t wait to get it going on my new 2-channel setup. I love Dave Matthews, but Tim Reynolds is not from this earth is he? I could watch a 2 hour show of him alone. What an amazing genius!

Cheers again mate

Just thought I'd give an update since the breaking in period is well and truely over now for the One's, my amp and all new power cables and PS Audio powerboard.

Pleased to say that the treble is no longer as aggressive as when I played played music and becaus of this I've toed in the speakers a little more, and the angles are now in line with the manuals recommendation.

More importantly I'm loving listening to music on this system. Amazing combination that's sure to bring hours of listening pleasure!

I guess in keeping with the topic of this thread, if anyone was unsure of what 2-channel amp to use with the Triton Ones, I'd happily recommend you demo the Peachtree 220se with these speakers.

The only other amp that I heard that was better with the One's was the Naim Supernait 2 + Hicap2 + DAC combination, which was about 4 times the price of the Peachtree integrated, so it was an easy decaion for the wallet! And the Peachtree gets me about 98% of the way to what I heard with the Naim setup, for my music listening needs.

Hope this helps somebody out there with their future speaker and amp auditioning dilemas !

Cheers
