I am looking for True Detective. That is a series, right? But also a new movie coming out, right?
I like TV series, good ones that is.
I had very mixed feelings about "Breaking Bad" but watched it all. The sound was good, music particularly.
I enjoy "House of Cards", not much interesting on the sound field though.
The best to me is "24", that was the best show, best series ever!!!!!
Now next best is "Game of Thrones", can't wait until the next season is out. Sound? Well, I get so caught up in the program that I am not sure whether it is good or just decent.
Now I am watching and enjoying "Grimm". I am surprised at how decent it is. And the sound is really quite good surround sound. It is just Dolby Digital 5.1 but the surround information is really involving.
Hope this report helps a little.
Please keep these coming guys,
Happy listening, God Bless, Wayne

Wayne,

You and I like a lot of the same material. I love Game of Thrones, House of Cards, and 24. The Wife and I have watched Grimm from the beginning of the series.

True Detective is another HBO series. Last season starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. The performances were top notch! Better than Cheers and Interstellar... Last night was the debut of season 2 and I was less impressed but sometimes it can take a few episodes to get into the story. Last night was about setting the stage and introducing the main characters. I'm sure it will ramp up.

I always find the PQ and SQ of television to be unimpressive. I have DIRECTV and it is just a bit flat as are movies from Netflix. While I may not be able to tell high bit rate audio, I would bet I could pick out Blu-Ray versus satellite/Netflix 99 times out of 100. I'm sure streaming audio and video has its limitations and I try not to be too critical with these sources.

Let me know if you are able to check out True Detective and what you think. As a word of warning, it is a bit dark...

Cheers,

T Cobe

Hey Toby,
YES, looks like we enjoy the same kinds of entertainment.
One thing I did not make clear, sorry. I do NOT watch these shows on TV, my schedule is too unpredictable, or it is not easy to watch a show week after week. We do NOT have streaming, netflix or Tivo and such, so I buy box sets of the DVDs of a series and then I can watch them any time I want. As many times as I want (OK this only ever applied so far to 24).
My Oppo upconverts DVDs to a pretty great picture, though not quite as good as blu-ray. The sound is lacking compared to blu-ray too, but is still surround sound. I should have mentioned that all these TV shows I am talking about I watched on DVDs.
Sorry, that is important information, I forgot that people actually watch these on TV broadcast or streaming.
One of these days that might be available, but for me it is shiny discs all the way!!!!
AND, an added extra benefit of the shiny disc, If the show is just terrible, or the music is rubbish, then the discs can be stuck on the back of a cart as a reflector so cars don't drive into the back of it as it goes down the road. I have even seen one on an elephant's tail!!!!
OH, and a show being a bit dark, as you mentioned of True Detective, dark is my thing.
God bless,
Wayne

Alrighty then,
Tonight's diversion was "Wild" with Resse Witherspoon.
She is pretty good, this is pretty well written, but more contemplative than wild, if you ask me.
I guess it was based on a true story or at least a book about somebody.
PQ was good, there is some beautiful scenery here, it was WAY confusing to me about the seasons.
SQ was good by way of DTS-HD MA 5.1
Nothing remotely reference here, sound did not play much part.
I would not recommend this unless you are a real R. Withespoon fan.
Hope this helps,
God Bless, Wayne

So tonight I watched "Kingsmen". It was interesting, a little slow, but a different take on the cool spy movie.
Good acting, Sam L Jackson is in it, and you know he is VERY particular about what movies he is in!!!!
And that Brit that plays in a lot of these, was good. Sofia Boutella is amazing, how did they do that??????
PQ was quite good, very good.
SQ was by way of DTS-HD MA 7.1 and I really enjoyed the score. LOTS of good musical sounds, really sounded great in my theater. Rich and full, some with great bass, but nothing reference that I noticed.
It started out on a higher level at first but let down the standard a lot at the end.
Recommended for the different stuff in it, and for pretty good sound all around.
God Bless,
Wayne

Tonight's entertainment by way of Blu-ray was "Wild Card" starring Jason Stratham.
PQ was quite good, but mostly inside Las Vegas Casinos. SQ by DTS-HD MA5.1 was actually surprisingly good, in this sense.
There was LOTS of good music, Christmas songs by crooners like Dean Martin and Ray Charles. And other high quality musical sound.
There was no reference use of surround sound as such that I noticed. But sounded good.
This is just slug it out, violent bloody sorta fun entertainment.
Recommended if you take it for what it is worth, kinda a good showing of the addictive nature of gambling.
It was OK, God Bless,
Wayne
