Well, after a great deal of self-debate, I decided to pull the trigger on the Emotiva XMC-1 to replace my Onkyo reciever. Should get here by the end of the week.
I've been listening to blurays in 7.x mode (rather than 11.x) quite a bit lately, with direct decoding rather than DSX or Neo:X with highs (SS50s) and wides (T7s) to really compare what those extra channels were giving me. The T1s and T2s as fronts/surrounds are just so damn good at imaging and have such large sound stages that highs and wides really don't add diddly squat IMHO, even using T7s as wides. Certainly not worth the money for extra speakers and amps for the more ambient channels. The difference is/was a bit more prominent when I had T2s in the front and SS50s all around, but honestly after playing with the 11.x setup over the past year, I think as long as one has good gear, Neo:X and DSX is more gimmick than value.
So... I decided that the XMC-1 (which is 7.2) with full Dirac Live should be a nice step up from running the Onkyo reciever as a pre/pro. The Onkyo has much more networking capability (e.g. Pandora, DLNA, internet radio), but I use a roku and an apple tv for those bits anyway. And the really really annoying thing about the Onkyo is it doesn't have a trigger out for the main zone, so I have to use the zpne three trigger to fire up the amp stack. Not a big deal, but the extra set of button pushes on the remote to turn the amps on is just stupid. Onkyo seems stubborn on this particular lack of feature as folks have been complaining for years, but I guess one has to buy their Integra line for a main zone trigger.
