Wayne,
I believe the bottom line is that Luthor Jr. was getting inside the heads Batman and Superman, driving the eventual conflict. Unfortunately, they did a terrible job conveying the story. The extended edition was a bit better but still lacking.
Suicide Squad was much the same. What DC movies are failing to do, that Marvel excels at, is developing the characters and telling a cohesive story. The audience develops an empathy for the superheroes and even the villains on occasion. DC seems to be directly adapting graphic novels to the screen and leaving all the gaps that the artists can't fill with limited use of words and so few pictures (in comparison to the 30 pictures a second on a film). It's more like a series of ideas or a story board: almost like reading an outline of a novel versus the actual novel itself. Put another way, the movies are all style and no substance.
Cheers,
