Have you been "smoking a doobie"?
I appreciate your "wondering minds want to know" questions.
I got into contemporary/smooth jazz 10-12 years ago, It was a gradual transformation from metal/hard rock. In the past 1-2 years my tastes have veered towards be-bop/free jazz. Why? I really don't know, other than it really appeals to me. The sound of the sax, the beauty of the trumpet played in all its glory, I find spellbinding. I understand what you are saying about "toe tappin" and melody, etc. The uptempo tracks in individual recordings generally grab my attention first, but not always. The track from Jane Ira Bloom, "First thoughts/this nearly was mine", is a beautiful solo soprano saxophone number that is well recorded and just "sounds right". I appreciate an album with both uptempo and ballad type style.
I try not to think to deeply as to why I listen to what I listen to. All I know is that as the years have progressed, my musical tastes have changed.
If I were on a desert island and could only listen to one genre of music (besides spiritual) it would be be-bop/free jazz...Dave Douglas and Joshua Redman.
Who knows what I'll be into next week, next month, or next year...

The first of several CDs coming this week arrived today. Go, by Gordon Dexter, features Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums backing up Gordon's work on the tenor sax. This is a Blue Note RVG remaster of recordings from the early 1960s. This one has not been a disappointment and it will get regular rotations as part of my growing collection. Gordon's work on the sax is upbeat, or as Rick may say, toe tappin!
Cheers,
T Cobe

Thanks, Anthem!
I'm not even sure I know what a doobie is a joint? Nope, no doobies here.
I listened to Jane Ira Bloom's "First thoughts/this nearly was mine" again, this time on DEEZER. Hauntingly beautiful, played with emotion. Fantastic!! It "hooks" me the way great classical music does. I added it to my DEEZER favorites list.
I guess I'll just keep listening my way through jazz postings... I sure can find lots of "good stuff" I really enjoy.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond to a "wondering mind that wants to know"!

Frank Catalano / Bang (2008) -- My One and Only Love
Not a "Toe Tapper" but "Good Stuff" none the less.
Frank has a very unique style, as evidenced here.
Enjoy...I think you'll like it.
T Cobe: I've sniffed around Gordon Dexter's "Go" but never pulled the trigger.
Maybe it's about time.

Branford Marsalis / Bloomington (1993) -- The Beautyful Ones...
Listening to some great Jazz and watching The Three Stooges.
This recording sounds extra special this morning, due in part to the EL34 tube change (now Mullards) and replacing ALL pc's with Anti-Cable Reference 3's.
I'm not sensing anymore sax brightness with this arrangement.
System is still the same as of June 1st.
