Thanks Bambam841,
That is a funny reason for the nickname, and YES I have and have seen the movie THE RAID.
Let us know what you decide, what you buy and how it sounds.
And go easy on the Ethanol.
God Bless,
Wayne

bambam841 wrote: The main question I have, would a movie have to be shot with DTS:X audio and transferred to the Bluray disc in order for it to be processed by the AVR and then sent to the speakers? Secondly, how much less effective (sound wise) would it be to have upward firing atmos speakers vs. actual ceiling placed speakers be? since I will be renting a house it's highly likely that the owner would not allow for any alterations be made to his ceilings/walls.

Thought I'd provide some answers and a little devils advocate for you. In answer to your questions:

1) Atmos and DTS X encoded material is BluRay-only now, probably coming to all your favorite TV shows very soon though. Expect everything to be Atmos or DTS-X in the coming years.

2) Lots of feedback on this forum, our website, and other AV forums regarding upward firing, let's just say its not the preferred method. So, if you live in an apartment, height channel speakers are not for you, for now.

But, the new decoding engine in an Atmos receiver will analyze what speakers you have in place and create the object-based output for the speakers you do have, for both Atmos-encoded AND with non-Atmos encoded material. I would not dismiss Atmos, it is a significant improvement in multi-channel audio playback. If you're starting out fresh, why skip the latest technology?

Bambam841,

You also need to consider product life if you buy a new receiver that is not going to pass the upcoming HDMI 2.0a and other picture information. I've been a bit behind in my reading lately but there is high dynamic range color and other technology that is going into 4K/UHD that the older receivers may not be compatible with. You may want to invest in a lower end newer model that will not be obsolete if you get a 4K television and UHD player. Just another .02 cents to consider. I think the new Anthems will have those capabilities as well as the Marantz 7010 and 6010. You could also consider purchasing a refurbished unit to get a little more for you money.

Cheers,

Anthem's Arc correction sounds so much better than Audissey /XT32 to me. Much superior to the Denon I had.
