This one speaks for itself if you play it through your GET setup!

Cheers,

Ravi Coltrane / Moving Pictures (1998) -- Inner Urge

Got this a couple of weeks ago and have been tracking through it for 3 days now, finally finished it tonight. Overall a pretty good set of tunes (his debut album) a few of the songs are a little strange, but worth listening to. As always, razziness in the Saxophone is evident in various tracks...why do they torment with this annoyance? The razziness/distortion aside...this is a worthy debut from the son of one of the Greatest Saxophonist to ever live.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is the son of John and Alice Coltrane. John Coltrane passed away when Ravi was two. While he had a musical upbringing by his mother and began playing fairly early, he did not commence a jazz vocation until he was in his early twenties. Coltrane was able to hone his chops playing with Elvin Jones' group before meeting Steve Coleman and Graham Haynes. Coltrane became a member of the M-Base consortium of artists and signed to RCA in 1997 (which lists Coleman on its roster as well). Coleman produced and guested on Ravi's first recording, Moving Pictures (1998), as did trumpeter Ralph Alessi. The critical comparisons were inevitable, but Coltrane seemed to see this coming before he ever recorded a note. Coltrane's tone on tenor (he plays some soprano, too) is more reminiscent of Joe Henderson's -- though his father's sound is slightly evident -- and in covering "Inner Urge" on his debut, he made it impossible to deny.

This sounds pretty smooth to me, Anthem. I know, different category. I don't think I'm quite ready for Smooth Jazz yet. I won't say never. Ten years ago I never thought I would be listening to jazz at all. I did like the Ravi Coltrane. My next album will be Charles Mingus: Blues and Roots. I ordered it a month ago and it finally arrives Friday. So much for Amazon Prime... I should have the day off and may visit my local dealer to borrow some cables (speaker and power). I'm looking forward to some extended listening sessions.

Cheers,

T Cobe
