Thanks guys,
I don't normally get the used stuff, but I did just order your suggestion Charlie.
I work with Amazon a LOT so it seemed easier than setting up an acct. in the UK, but I will keep that in mind Bro Art.
And look for your recommendations Charlie, thanks.

Gdhal, I sorta wish music was free, but I don't mind supporting musicians really. Rather them than bomb makers/politicians.
The Greatful Dead don't really do it for me much though.

God Bless,
Wayne

Took me a while to reply. Your experience -- and likes -- with CD sound mirror mine very well. Add to that the extended bass response in CDs, which really made a big difference for me. Even today, a lot of digitally re-mastered analog recordings from the 50s and early 60s lack that bottom end. I think the recording engineers were dialing it down because they knew they were going to vinyl with its bass limitations. Late 60s and 70s recordings seem to fare better in this regard.

Charlie, I remember reading or hearing somewhere long ago that, during the vinyl years, recording engineers needed to compress the dynamic range of analog recordings because of physical playback limitations of standard turntables and inexpensive cartridges. It seems that it would have been possible to add low-end dynamic range, but if they had done so, many cartridge/needle combinations simply would not have accurately tracked those grooves. In extreme cases, the needle would literally have jumped out of the groove.

I have several re-mastered classical recordings on CD for which I also have the original vinyl. Comparing the CDs to the vinyl easily demonstrates the additional dynamic range which was available on the master tape, but which was suppressed on the vinyl.

I envy your performance experience. I'm sure that knowledge adds a great deal to your listening!

Let us know how your experiment works.

On the Hi Res topic, sort of: If you guys haven't purchased these already, I highly recommend the Decca Dutoit/Montreal set (35 CDs, all digital recordings) and the Decca Sound "The Analog Years" (54 CDs). The Dutoit set has the consistently best recorded orchestral sound I have heard. The Analog Years set has an excellent booklet with a great history of the development of Decca recording technology. Some of the CDs illustrate the different microphone techniques used, and I can clearly hear the differences. I think these are well worth the money.

I have a number of Dutoit/Montreal CDs. I agree that they are fine recordings. I will look in to the entire CD set to see if it is a good value for me, given what I already have. Thanks for the suggestion.

Charlie

Charlie I looked on Amazon for both your Decca recommendations. And frankly they are too expensive an investment for me, for only 2 channel sound.
I know myself that I just won't listen to them.
It is surround sound for me in my home theater. 2 channel is for walking/exercising and that is just not my kind of exercise music.
But I am sure it is a great recommendation for someone else.
Thanks, God Bless,
Wayne

You guys with all your new, expensive, wonderful speakers (well that included me too, just a few thousand dollars less expensive).
You need some great, hi res music to listen to.
The name of this one does not do it justice, but Stale Kleiberg and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra have produced some great new(er) music here. And it is performed, and recorded wonderfully.
It is in stereo and 5.1 surround. There is a concerto here for violin and orchestra (the treble part) and one for double bass and orchestra (the bass part). Modern but not jarring and awful sounding like a lot of it is, this is magic, good music.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it.
This will show off your system.
Happy Listening,
God Bless,
Wayne
