Regarding spikes on Triton Ones: Do spikes improve sound when the Ones are sitting on a basement concrete (or other hard surface) floor and when that floor is on a slab?

In my experience the bass always sounds tighter and better defined when the speaker is on spikes. There are two reasons for this, as I understand it:

1) Allowing some airflow under the bass of the speaker reduces floor coupling significantly, floor coupling adds bass (boundary effect) muddying the sound;

2) The pounds-per-square-inch for floor contact is like 1000 times higher with the spikes, giving much better coupling to the floor and preventing micro-motions of the entire speaker with bass energy, which causes IM distortion from the rest of the speaker;

All subtle, but, in my experience, instantly audible.

Again, thanks for the detailed explanation. Now, one further question: Are there any concerns about mechanical stability of the speakers when the spikes are employed and the speakers sit on a hard surface?

Yep, can be, the rubber foot or a rubber tipped spike would be the fallback.

OK. I'm going to take this discussion off line now. I will send a private message to you regarding what I should have in my Triton One packet.

Moderator Dude: I've used the rubber foot, as supplied on both the T1's and T2's, on my wood floors. Is there any reason I should investigate/test rubber tipped spikes as an alternative?

Thanks!

Rick

The rubber foot works nicely in that application, no need to look for aftermarket rubber-tipped spikes - unless you want to tinker.
