Hello All,

I am looking at upgrading my 2 channel amp for my Triton 3 towers. Currently I am using a NAD C270 (120watts per channel) but would like to upgrade to something better. I am looking at a few different options and wonder what other Triton tower owners would recommend.

Option 1: Bryston 4B SST2 (300W X2) used - but will still be on manufacturers warranty
Option 2: NAD C275 BEE (150W X2)
Option 3: Marantz MM7025 (140W X2)

Let's hear your comments and suggestions.

Thanks

Don

Current system:
Marantz SR6012 - pre-amp functions only
NAD C270 - powering Triton 3 towers for HT and 2 channel stereo
NAD 2400 - powering Klipsch surround channels
NAD C245 BEE- powering Klipsch rear surrounds
Defintive Technologies SuperCube 6000 - additional HT subwoofer
Technics SL-1210MK2 for vinyl
Various digital input sources...

What improvement do you hope to achieve with the amp upgrade? 120 WPC is pretty good for t3’s (I have the MM7025 with t2’s), but I don’t believe you’d get much improvement from an extra 20-30 wpc.

Triton Seven surround L/R
SuperSat 50 surround rear L/R
AVR Arcam AVR-21
Amp Marantz mm7025
Velodyne optimum 10” sealed, back left corner
SuperSub X front-right corner

Hi Timecop,

Thanks for your response. Ultimately I would like to get the most out my Triton T3s and I am hoping that an upgraded amp will help with that desire.

The NAD C270 is not a bad amp by any means, however I would like to see if a cleaner amp (less THD) and maybe more power will make the sound of the T3s even sweeter. Since my C270 is getting up there in age (more than 15 years), then it is probably due to have replacement capacitors put in to make it sing again. My thoughts here are that it might make more sense to replace the amp instead of refurbishing it.

In the case of the Bryston 4B SST2, the power output is rated 300wpc which is almost 3X the NAD C270 thus I would fully expect to hear some difference on the T3s.

After all, it is all about the quest for the best sound. At least that is my desire....

Thanks

Don

Hello Don, you stated: “get the most out of the speakers”, “make them sound sweeter”, “obtain the best sound”. Those are oddly non-specific goals though. When I added a separate amp with more power, the t2’s played with more authority and better control. That said, the addition of a better DAC vs. what the marantz AVR provides brings additional detail, clarity, and impact. The use of lossless music was also important. Finally, using matching speakers for all positions made home-theater seamless. So, my recommendations to get the most out of your system are, in order of what I’d upgrade:

1. Better DAC
2. Lossless music/source
3. Matching speakers
4. Lastly - more power

Have fun!

Thanks for your input TimeCop, I will take your recommendations into account when upgrading my system.

As you note, the better DAC and Lossless music source are important factors. The matching speakers are less important to me as the HT part of my system is merely an add on. What I'm looking to upgrade the most is my 2 channel music sound

Regards.

Don: Of the 3 amps mentioned, the Bryston 4BSST2 looks like a Winner. The reviews sound very positive, and it looks Great too.
D-Sonic m3a-600m Mono > McIntosh MC152 > Primaluna ProLogue Premium Preamp > Oppo UDP205 > Decware ZLC > Triton Reference > Isoacoustics Gaia 2 > Canare 4S11 Speaker Cables > Audience Forte 3, Anticable L3 & Shunyata Venom PC's

Every great performance deserves an Audience!
