Like Monster said, something is wrong.
But I have no idea how much signal you have coming in from your phone for the music.
That is why I suggest even borrowing a CD player or something that you know has a "normal" fixed output level, normally around 2 volt I think, sorry, have not thought about this in years. See how much you have to turn that up, as your input signal volumes could be really low.
Or, something wrong with the receiver.
It should not be that hot nor need to be turned up that much.
Hope you find out soon, then happy and cool listening,
God Bless,
Wayne

Monster/Wayne,

Continue to appreciate your inputs. I've reached out to Marantz, let's see what they come back with.

To pose an earlier question - the moderator is Sandy himself, right? Wonder why he's not chiming in.

Good you asked Marantz.
I do NOT think Sandy is the Moderator Dude, I have only seen Sandy even join here once.
And the Moderator Dude is asleep most likely.
We are around the world in WAY different time zones.
Look for some good answers from the sleeping guys later.
Blessings,
Wayne

I was reading a couple of the latest pages of the thread I directed you to.Some owners were having volume issues like you.

Someone suggested switching the HDMI mode to pure direct and setting speakers to "small"....

Not really sure if that would directly apply to your situation but it reinforces my hunch that you simply have a setting or 3 incorrect.

Ive always gotten pretty good, quick and reliable info from AVS users in the past so I think you should explore that thread and post your question(s) there in addition to contacting Marantz.

Good luck and keep us posted

That's right Wayne...different time zones...so lights out at 9:00 p.m. at the "ole folks home". Besides, the moderator needs his beauty sleep.
D-Sonic m3a-600m Mono > McIntosh MC152 > Primaluna ProLogue Premium Preamp > Oppo UDP205 > Decware ZLC > Triton Reference > Isoacoustics Gaia 2 > Canare 4S11 Speaker Cables > Audience Forte 3, Anticable L3 & Shunyata Venom PC's

Every great performance deserves an Audience!

Hi gang - a few comments pertaining to this thread:

1) The Moderator Dude (as I have been deemed) never sleeps

2) The Moderator Dude is NOT Sandy, but as I have mentioned in the past, I channel Sandy in every response

3) I do occasionally ask Sandy to draft a response, in which case the reply on my account will be signed "Sandy"

4) I do not participate in conversations other than to correct or clarify, this is a user forum

All that said, I cannot imagine why the Marantz is heating up, although I bet it is associated with the need to turn the volume way up ... be very sure that speaker wires are not touching anywhere (sounds a bit like a short to me). Triton Twos should never be set to small, always large (full band). Sub to "no" unless running the LFE line to both Triton Twos.
