Hmm.....I think that is a question best asked to Emotiva, I can't answer that with 100% confidence. I do a lot of stereo listening as well with my setup.
Edit: this is my email to Emotiva and their response, my guess is with his reference to hooking up zone two, 5 speakers with just 2 running in stereo would be just fine.
Hello Pek, if you do run the XPA-5 with 3 channels temporarily there is not harm to it. I would recommend running the remaining channels either with surrounds or at least perhaps a zone 2 solution.

Subject: XPA-5 Question
Hello,
I am currently an owner of an XPA-5 and I am only using it to run 3 channels, i.e. front, left and centre. I've recently read on a forum that the XPA-5 should be used to power all 5 channels as using less than this will be at detriment to the amp. Can you please advise? Thank you so much.
