I've done sound measurements for bands and I've played drums for 49 years:

Chamber Music small auditorium: 75-85dB

Full Symphony Orchestra: Low 90's with a peak at 98dB (Highest recoded levels from the web-120-137dB These levels are not common.

My daughter plays flute and I've measured 111dB that's louder than my drums which max out at 106dB-Bass drum/Timpani

Trumpet and Violins 95dB

In Europe they passed a law that max sound pressure for orchestras will be 85-87dB -Musicians are getting deaf!

Every audiophile should be very familiar with live instruments and amplified voices before they judge equipment.

Anthem I too have a pair of Triton 2's and they can get incredibly loud without distorting. Remember sound over 103dB causes Permanent Hearing Loss-Ouch! I wish I knew that when I saw Zeppelin-Physical Graffiti in 1975

Bottom line we have to protect our Golden Ears!
So much music-so little time!

Been "vinyl interested" for a while. Picked up a cheap turntable (music Hall usb-1) and cheap phono amp cambridge audio, broke out some old vinyl, bought some new and some old (from ebay) and having a grand old time.
I'd say the lower the note, the less interesting. But strings and vocals sound outstanding through the T1s.
Just got in my new copy of CSNs, first album, CSN. Outstanding harmonies!

Pbgalvin,

Glad to hear from someone else venturing into vinyl on the forum. I have enjoyed the experience and have found that the quality of music depends on the recording. In some cases the vinyl sounds better than CD, in other cases it does not. One thing I will say is that the low frequencies in my setup sound great. I get a great deal of punch, texture, and tonality.

I'm not experienced enough to tell you why you may not be experiencing the same. I purchased what reviewers said was a very high value turntable and went for a high quality stylus. My pre-amp has a phono input and plenty of gain for a moving magnet cartridge. I believe the resulting sound is very neutral and well balanced.

Cheers,

T Cobe
