To your specific problem, I recall reading that there is a setting whereby when the Oppo is powered off and then on, it can perform a complete reboot (instead of another setting whereby it does not completely reboot and has been reported to cause issues). This is either a power economy setting of some kind or perhaps even a network setting. But its true that the Oppo has at least two different methods of restart. Sorry I cannot be more specific as I'm typing off the top of my (bald) head.
GDHAL, thanks for the pointers. I couldn't find the restart methods in my 105 manual. But I will run through the system settings to see if something is out of whack. (Maybe I need to use Quick Start.) I've had two main areas where the Oppo hangs: 1) On startup, when it hangs during boot (not as much lately, probably because I've been waiting longer after powering up the TV and DAC), and 2) when I have been pushing optical digital from the TV and then switch to play a Blu-Ray disc. This one happens frequently, and makes me think I should power off the unit before changing to Blu-Rays. Something definitely gets messed up in there.

You're welcome Charlie.
One other thing. Have you called Oppo support and explained your issue? The may offer a resolution (other than firmware) right over the phone.

WayneWilmeth wrote: Guys, Kal Rubinson of Stereophile's "Music in the Round" just reviewed the Oppo udp 205. With no mention of the video aspect to speak of, he was talking about its musical abilities. And the fact that it can do what I need, play back multi-channel discs and files.
He said it sounds pretty good, not quite up there with almost $4000 equipment, but for the price it is right there, according to him.
That is what I am looking for. Check out his review.
But getting an all region player seems to be VERY hard in the 205. Am I gonna have to use the 205 to play music and the occasional BD from Amazon and use my old 95 for all other movies? Perhaps.
God Bless,
Wayne
Hi Wayne. Yes, I read his review a while ago. It's a great unit and I do recommend it. have you checked out that watershed URL link I posted? They have specific info on the region code situation. To my understanding - which in this case admittedly isn't that great because the region issue doesn't really concern me - while the region coding can be "cracked", there may be some legality/illegality issues at play so I think it can work across all regions on a "best effort" basis (i.e. without guarantees of any kind). But again, I'm really not completely sure.

Yes, I have checked all links I can find, and they are drying up. The Blu ray Disc Authority or some such is really pressuring to shut down any region free players.
When the first Oppo players came out they were all region free. But it did not take long for the powers that be to shut them down.
I have never bought a disc player over here in Thailand that was not jail break, was not region free. They just don't accept silly arbitrary limitations like that here. But so far, nobody here in Thailand can seem to break the code on this unit.
Will report if I get one.
God Bless,
Wayne

The whole point, for me, is the upgraded DACs in the 205, so that I will have better sound playing discs and files through them.
But after the sound comes outta the Oppo it has to go through my Emo XMC-1 processor. So the way to get the upgraded sound of the new DACs in the Oppo is to let the 205 do the processing and then take the analog outs from it into my XMC-1 and play in pure DIRECT REFERENCE, straight through. BUT
BUT
BUT, then I will not get the advantage of my pre-processor having DIRAC sound correction for my home theater room.
And that is a buzz killer, I have listened to pure direct many times and compared it with the correction that DIRAC does, DIRAC wins every time. I have a less than perfect room/setup, so the room correction helps.
IF I use the DACs in the Oppo, and then use the room correction in the XMC-1, then the processor has to take the analog signal, digitize it again, ADC, perform room correction, then DAC it again to go out to my amps. That double processing will surely degrade the sound, I will lose whatever I may gain from having the new DACs in the 205.
OUCH.
Looks like I will be better off with just an HDMI connection out of a player into my XMC-1 and enjoy the DACs it has, which are pretty darn good. Not the best in the world, surely, but good none the less.
Am I wrong or missing something here?
Thanks to bear with me,
God Bless,
Wayne

No, these problems are intermittent, near as I can tell. And, after all, they do have the lockup recovery mode built into the remote, so I think there are many deep seated problems in there. Maybe they've fixed some of this stuff with the 205.

No, you're not wrong or missing anything. If you cannot avail yourself of the UDP-205 DAC via amplifying its analog output directly (i.e. without any other processing, re-digitizing, room correction and so forth) then I don't know what would be the point of getting it. And, if you then reply "video is the point", then get the UDP-203
