GREAT to hear from you, Wayne!! I have had my eyes on the HE400i and the HE400S for some time and had narrowed down the headphone amp to either the Sony PHA-1 or an iFi model. My only issue is I really don't like wearing headphones unless I'm traveling, and in that case I don't want to share my music with the world as it is sometimes offensive or will have people feeling like they are riding an elevator rather than a plane...
I still think once you get up towards $1000 for a pair of headphones and portable amp, your right around the cost of a pair of Aons. Of course, you will still need to drive your Aons, but at least when Rick does that, his Wife might break out into spontaneous dance! Much better she get the urge to dance than feel like Rick is ignoring everyone with his headphones on.
Just my .02 on the topic. You can absolutely get great sound on a good pair of headphones and for home listening, the HiFiMan models would be right up there with Oppo for me. Between tuning out the rest of the world, potential hearing loss, and comfort for extended listening, on ear solutions are not my preference unless I'm on the go.
Wayne, I hope you and the family are well. Hopefully we start hearing a bit more of you here. TexThai's opinions are respected here!
Cheers,
