Hi guys,

I have finally completed building out a 5.2.4 system using all GE. The only speaker left to replace is my def tech clr 2500. I have the space (provided it is acceptable to place the center in an open cabinet) for the xxl. My concern is the fact that if I place it in a cabinet with an open front as it has top mounted bass modules I will get some boomyness. My clr is much smaller yet powered and I didn’t really have a problem. I could also toy with the idea of a speaker stand but it would be less attractive in my home.

It will be powered by an Anthem MCA 525 with the fronts and main surrounds. My surrounds Atmos heights are all golden ear in wall speakers.

Hi, Gutcheck

I have a SuperCenter XXL in an open cabinet that is 18" high, so roughly 13" of clearance above the speaker. No boominess whatsoever. I've read that even as little as 2" of clearance would be enough. Moderator Dude can comment if that is incorrect.

That is correct. With a typical 80 Hz crossover even as little as 1" is OK.

I can also verify, I have about 1 inch clearance between the top of my cabinet and the top of my speaker and I hear no boominess. I had the xxl for a year in this configuration (now I have the reference center).
Main System
Video: Epson 6040UB, SI 120 inch
Source: PS DS, Logitech Transporter, Marantz UD5005, xBox One, PC
Front end: Marantz 8802A, BHK Pre
Amplification: MM7055 (surround), BHK 300 (Front LR)
Speakers: TRef, ReferenceCenter, HTR7000 (4 atmos), SPS (surround/surround rear)

What is the reference center? A soon to be released speaker? I have the one.r's so I would like to get the appropriate matching speaker. Can you share the dimensions?
