GE experts, I know this topic has been discussed on this forum, but I didn't find a clear answer, hence posting if to hear from audiophiles. I came across Triton Reference series and was blown away by the sound, and am finally deciding to get my own Triton towers, albeit one of the smaller brothers that fit my budget. As added context, I will be using it for pure 2 channel audio, pairing it with Cambridge Audio CXA81. Mostly easy listening - classic rock, new age pop, bit of jazz, a little classical piano. No Hip Hop or Movies. And I mostly listen at low to mid volume levels, I rarely blow the roof.

I am torn between Triton 5 and Triton 3+, as the price differential between the two isn't much. On the face of it 3+ seems to be the winner with its active sub and deeper bass, but I am sure there is more to it than meets the eye. So here is what I am wondering -

Does 3+ necessarily mean better sound and superior acoustics? Does the 5 have any advantages?
Is the 5 seriously lacking in Bass, or is it good enough. I am not listening to any bass heavy stuff, so nice bass is good enough

Any thougts?

Hello VRock. Welcome to the GE forum. :)

You pose questions that realistically can only be answered subjectively. This is not to imply there is anything at all wrong with your questions.

I would answer your questions by stating, in my opinion, yes, the 3+ would result in better sound and superior acoustics, relative to the 5.

The 5 would be advantageous in so far as it's overall footprint is smaller, and its price is lower with respect to the 3+. Also, the 5 does not draw electric power so there is (very small) money to be saved there, in addition to less (very small) likelihood that something - such as plate amp failure - could go wrong.

And no, I don't believe that the 5 would be lacking bass. However, the 3+ would give you more options/control as far as base output.

Generally speaking all audio manufacturers have products that range between lower and higher price points. It's usually the case that the higher priced product within the same manufacturer and type of product is going to be "better" (again, this can be subjective) than the lower priced product.

If cost is not or of little concern, the 3+ is what you want. :)
