New T REF owner here.

This might be a bit of an unusual one, but I'd love to know whether anyone has used their T REFs without the base? I understand that it provides stability, but other than that, would there be any sonic difference if I didn't use the bases? Are their function purely to provide stability?

Cheers

Technically speaking, yes. You can use the T Refs without the base. I believe I've seen (could be mistaken) a youtube video where someone actually did this. Note that the base provides more than stability. It also "holds" down the front grill. The other issue is sonics. Without a proper base, the speaker is not going sound as good as it otherwise would. Just curious, why would you want to remove the base? Clearly something else would be needed to support the speaker.

Thanks for the reply, GDHAL.

The bases are just massive and the speakers would work much better in my relatively small space without them. I have bamboo flooring which is as close to 100% smooth and flat as you could expect, so stability would not be an issue as such. I can also create a simple >< metal or wooden brace which I can screw into the base, if absolutely required. Just to add... holy cheeseballs, these speakers are unbelievable - coming from the very accomplished Focal Aria 948s, these just flat out blow them out of the water on every level. I didn't expect the smooth and warm midrange from these at all.

Anyway, thanks again.

You're welcome. What I don't understand is, to your point about the bases being "massive", that is something you'd have to take into consideration *before* you purchase them to begin with. Best of luck. :)

Unfortunately I never got to see these in the flesh before buying, and I'd just like to customise them to my living space. I'll experiment over the next few weeks and leave some feedback here once I've done so. Thanks again for the reply.

So, it's been ages since I posted this, but I'm replying to my original post and hope it might be of some help at all to anyone else considering removing the base. I've had the TRefs set up without the bases and they sound exactly the same with and without the bases. They are definitely wide enough to stand quite solidly without the base, at least on a flat floor - your mileage will definitely vary if you're on carpet.

Still so deeply happy with these speakers, they are still outperform my expectations every week.
