So an update for those that are interested...

I was able to demo a few devices at home - the Line Magnetic 501ia, the PrimaLuna Dialogue HP Premium and the Rega Elicit-R.

The only one that made me stop "testing" and analysing the sound and just enjoy the music..?

The PrimaLuna! It really did have a certain "something" to it - no doubt that it does colour the sound slightly, but it does so in way that is smooth and lush and musical. I probably listened for 10+ hours over the two days I had it and not once did I get fatigued or bored.

I reckon I got a pretty good deal (especially for New Zealand - the equivalent of US$3100 at current rates) on a nice new Black model which arrives at the dealers on Wednesday. (incidentally the same dealer I got my Triton Twos from in the first place)

For the others, the Line Magnetic was oddly disappointing- sounded flat, muted and the bass was pretty bloomy. The Rega was a great device, but I felt it didn't offer enough over my current Cambridge to justify the money.

Hi Wayne,

It comes with EL34s. It will happily take KT88, KT120 or even KT150 (though I am not sure the cage fits with the latter!) so I have more options to tinker with should I want to!

Most everyone that rolls tubes on the PL come back to the EL34's...sweet tube.
Take the cage off...most of us do. Doesn't get quite as hot with the cage off.

Hey PoisonFush and Bro Anthem, AGREED 100% the EL 34 tubes have some of the sweetest sound in the world.
And if they have enough power, ummph, bass, etc. for the kind of music you like, then I would certainly stick with them.
Do you mind PF, what kind of music do you like to listen to? You may need some time to listen and experiment, but do you get enough power in Triode mode, or do you have to run them in UL? What kind of differences do you hear if you change from Triode to UL?
I am very excited for you and hoping to learn from what you experience.
