Hi all,
I have just purchased a pair of Triton 1's for use in my home theatre room as part of my 5.1 setup. I am contemplating a Musical Fidelity M6Si or M6500i integrated amp and will use their HT bypass for 2 channel listening. My dilemma is whether I need to spend the extra $3000 on the 500wpc 6500 over the 220wpc 6Si? As the 1's are fairly efficient, and the amp is essentially powering mids and tweeters, do I need all that power?

Praljak,
Congrats on the T1s and welcome to the forum! You're in for some great sound and it sounds like your outing a great system together. "Need" is always a relative term. Do you need 500 wpc? Probably not but the question is what other differences are there between the amps? If it is simply more wattage, my guess is you'd be quite happy with 220 watts. My amps aren't much more powerful than that and I have more than enough headroom.
That said, we've probably all settled on a previous upgrade and regretted it afterwards. I hate that feeling. It would be best to try and demo both units and see which one sounds better and put your mind at ease. If you listen to both at the same dB output and you can't hear much of a difference, you've got your answer. It only gets sticky if you can hear a difference. Then you have to place a value on that improvement. For me, it would have to be a lot better for an additional $3,000. Let us know how it goes and what you decide. Happy hunting!
Cheers,
T Cobe

Hi,
I think the 220 watts would be sufficient. I power my T1's with NAD M17 pre & M27 amp, which puts out 180 watts a channel. I never hear any strain or feel that I've made a wrong decision on powering the T1s. If you have the money to spend, put it towards some good cables.
Regards,
Bobbo

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go with the bigger option, as I don't want any regrets down the track. I'll let you know how it all sounds when I get it in early April.

praljak, I have the M6si and T1s... bought them both within 1 month of each other this past December...
I never listened to the M6500i. Its twice the price and for me 220wpc is WAY more than enough power (especially with a speaker as efficient as the Tritons)
Also, not sure if this matters to you but the M6si has superior specs (THD and signal-to-noise ratio) as listed on the musical fidelity site. Also, the M6si has a 1x USB type ‘B’ connector - asynchronous data stream at up to 24-bit/96kHz input and the 6500 does not. This is VERY VERY VERY USEFUL. In my case the USB is essential as I connect my PC via the USB and use the DAC in the M6si. Killer!
You wouldn't go wrong with either piece though!

Cheers for the advice. I ended up buying the 6500i, but I'm currently overseas and won't get to hook it all up till early April. I've read great reviews on both amps so I think I will be extremely happy. Are you happy with your Tritons?
