Seeking advice/opinions from any T Ref owner who has removed the front grill (for whatever reason). I have the golden ear instructions as to how to remove and put back on the front grill. I am curious if anyone has removed the grill and offer advice on what to do, avoid, etc. Note I am not casually removing the grill as it is a necessity to replace a blown tweeter. Any opinions/advice is welcome. Thank you.

Note that according to the instructions for GET, one is expect to loosen two bottom screws. Then, with a mallet, or hammer and wood block, tap screws to push the grille upwards to allow access to the ends of the grille for easier removal. This seems rather daunting to me as even a slight vibration from a hammer blow could conceivably cause additional issues with other drivers.

Hi GDHAL, You really do not need to use much force when removing the Triton Reference grille. You will only need to tap the grille so it's loosened from the track that secures the grille into the track on the front of the cabinet. When replacing the grille, however, we have found that it works better with two people. Since the grille is fairly large, it's easier to reinstall the grille when four hands are maneuvering the grille into the track or channel on the front of the cabinet.

Okay folks.... here's some inside info.... I (with dealer technician and GET technician assistance) just replaced the tweeter on both of my Reference speakers.... my bad as to the cause of their failure....that said it was still performed under warrantee.... a sincere thank you to Golden Ear.....

Now read/understand this FACT.... in order to replace the tweeter, besides removing the front grill (which was not at all problematic), the unexpected (even by Golden Ear) occurred... in order to replace the tweeter, one ***MUST*** remove the midrange driver below the tweeter in order to gain enough slack in the wring to remove the damaged/existing tweeter and attach the wiring (two, keyed by size) to the new tweeter. Annoying for sure, however, in the end it worked out.

So my T Ref's are now sporting brand new reference tweeters!

1) What did you do that blew the tweeters? Don't feel bad; I blew my midrange and bass drivers on a T1 a long time back. (Slap my face.) That was by doing a frequency sweep test at too high a volume. My bad. Hence my curiousity about your experience.

2) What did the blown tweeter(s) sound like? What made you think they were bad?

3) Why did you replace both? Were both damaged, or was this to make sure they matched?

Secondly, I knew that the tweeters were blown because I heard a sizzle sound from one of them and I was able to smell a burning odor from both of them. That's how I knew that they were both no good.

As far as how it sounded when blown, that's a great question and I did not include an answer to it in my write-up on my Triton review page, so I'll indicate it here. It sounded veiled. Meaning you can still hear that there was some high frequency sound, but it was obvious that it was muffled and much lower in decibels compared to the rest of the frequency range and the rest of the drivers. Even when the tweeters were damaged, they were still able to reproduce frequencies/sound that they are meant to play, albeit at a much lower output level. Also, upon taking the front grill off, it was obvious that the tweeters were damaged because there was brown caramelized color over 1/3 of the ribbon portion of both of them.

Thanks for the information. I looked at your linked article. I think there's a misprint on the frequency you were using. Were you using 15.9999 kHz? I think there's a decimal point missing in your article. Otherwise, you really must have ears that would impress even a bat!

You were doing something similar to what I did when I fried my drivers.
