TCobe,

Didn't mean to hijack this thread with acoustic treatment discussion (sorry Mark), after doing it though it really is a worthwhile step in "perfecting" our listening/media rooms.

I started on my quest by talking with a few local dealers. As I got into it though I found that my budget ($1500) would easily get absorbed and leave me with a lot more to tackle down the road. AVS is a good resource, but one can quickly get overwhelmed. I LOVE movies and music, but I'm not an engineer so some of the science gets lost on me. I wanted to keep things simple while understanding the basics. I was going to go with GIK but when I found out their panels were 4" thick it was a no go for me. My room is only 14' wide which doesn't leave a lot of room for seating, I couldn't afford acoustic panels that would eat up even that extra 4". I also found that the Acoustical Solutions 2" panels had just as good of broadband absorption as the GIK panels (on paper). I worked with Jordan Moran, Principal Acoustic Engineer over at Acoustical Solutions for the layout of my treatments. I also found a useful tool on the ATS Acoustics webpage for estimating how much coverage you should have based on your room. For my room it came back with 100 square feet which incidentally was exactly what I had ordered with Acoustical Solutions. During the process I was conscious of not over treating my room, I didn't want the room to sound too dead. In talking room treatments at a high end audio store I was told over treating a room would be like putting your hands over your ears and getting that hollow dead sound you hear in your own head.

In the end, largely due to the significant cost of shipping 200 pounds of 4' x 5' panels, I came back a little over my budget. Hearing the results though I'd say it was money well spent.

The benefit of doing all of the work in my media room myself was that I was able to save $$$ and put that towards finishing touches like room treatments :)

Be well

After some experimentation, I found I was able to overcome most of the problems I had been having with bass suck outs in my room by adding a pair of inexpensive sealed subwoofers. I was able to move them around the room until I found locations in the back corners that "filled in" the dead spots. Much improved overall bass response! I guess this would be considered a "shotgun" approach, but it worked!
