Hi, Daylightdon

Now that I have DTS:X with it's Neural up mixing capability in addition to DOLBY ATMOS, I plan on re playing some Blu-rays with the older DTS and DOLBY formats, and let the upmixer add the height channels. I could play virtually any non ATMOS or DTS:X Blu-ray up mixed with added height channels. I'll be checking out a few to see how the upmixing works/sounds, vs. newer Blu-rays already encoded with the ATMOS or DTS:X format. I suspect the ATMOS and DTS:X encoded ones will sound more realistic, as they were sound mixed with the appropriate height channel inputs, vs. whatever fuzzy logic the upmixer uses on older formats to apportion some of the audio to the new height channels. We'll see. I like the limited number of upmixed music Blu-rays I've tried so far, haven't played around with upmixed non ATMOS or DTS:X action movies yet. That's next. I think I'll try FURY, whose DTS HD Master Audio soundtrack I love as is, and see how much adding height channels changes the experience.

P.S. Anthem, thanks for the lists of ATMOS and DTS:X formatted Blu-rays!

Re ATMOS encoded movies, I just got 13 Hours. I'll be watching that in the next few days, and will comment on how it sounds in ATMOS format here. It's already been well reviewed on the Blu-ray thread.

Happy listening!

I just finished re-watching/listening to Fury upmixed to DTS Neural 5.2.4. I had some reservations about how upmixed action Blu-rays would sound with height channels added, vs. new tracks with the height channels already sound mixed in. I.E. would the prior formats sound natural or some artificial. Fury in it's original DTS HD Master Audio sound track is among the best I've heard. DTS Neural makes it even better!!! I still don't quite understand what logic process is used to apportion what parts of the soundtrack to the heights, but it works. Planes were flying OVER me, artillery shells were doing the same.

For anyone wondering whether ATMOS height channels can add to the audio experience, my answer is yes. And yes also to the HTR 7000's value as height speakers. Those babies are amazing! The Invisa 525's as top rears and the HTR 7000's as top fronts play together perfectly. I have the 7000's set with 60 HZ crossovers, and left the 525's at 80 HZ. Between the LFE to the T1's and T2's. and the bass in the SCXXL (60HZ crossover) and the 7000's and 525's, it seems I'm surrounded in bass! I understand that in theory, bass under 80 HZ is non directional, but all I know is that I feel completely surrounded in bass with the SCXXL and 7000's at 60 HZ. Maybe they fill bass room null? Don't know. Any feedback from 7000 or Aon 3 users on what crossovers they found best/headroom issues welcome!

What I really like about the height speakers is that ATMOS and DTS:X can upmix lots of inputs, including, TV/cable surround, prior surround formats on Blu-rays, 2 channel music feeds... I find I can listen to lots of audio feeds with heights added, and know that lots more ATMOS and DTS:X formatted material is coming...

Reviews on ATMOS 13 Hours, The Legend of Tarzan, etc. coming when I get a chance to play them.

Happy listening!

Rick,

What you're describing makes sense. More drivers creating the same frequencies should move more air and create greater pressures. At least that's how I understand it. This is probably an oversimplification on many levels, but it makes sense in my head...;)

Cheers,

I just finished watching 13 Hours... what a movie!

As always, I'm sure the sound track is great in non-ATMOS formats also. What does ATMOS add? I always get the sense with height speakers engaged that the sounds aren't limited to front and back... there's a feeling that things are going on overhead also. In this movie, especially in the multi story buildings being defended, there was such an impression of mortars overhead, people climbing up and down ladders, debris flying overhead, planes flying over.. I loved the soundtrack. Now and then I would look up and see if I could determine what the height channels were playing. It seem they were engaged for most of the movie, but never in an intrusive way, just like all GET speaker, totally blending in with the other speakers, making this magical bubble of sound. Amazing. I am SO in love with my 5.2.4 set up!
