I used to hate classical singing. MOST opera types, I will call them, put a REALLY HARD edge on their notes, (Sara B. still does this, compare her voice, beautiful and clear as it is to A. Bocelli above), which comes from the throat IMHO and is there to carry well into the theater from the days when there were no microphones, or very few. I LOVE the voice of Andrea Bocelli (the Il Divo tenor does this too) who sings from the diaphragm with an open, relaxed throat to let the sound float out. Bocelli rarely closes in on the note to force it. Compare to Pavarotti (God bless and rest his soul) who was as pure and beautiful singing Nessun Dorma as ever heard before.
Now listen to Bocelli, who came up in the microphone age, not singing on the opera stage:
More than nuff said, sorry
God Bless, Wayne
Hey, Wayne
I waited 15 hours to see your post, and finally pushed it through with a push post.
Thanks! Beautiful voices are what they are... beautiful. You struck a chord with me. I have never "warmed up" to opera, and your description of the really hard edge to the voices may be why. I just can feel it when I am transported by a gorgeous voice, and opera doesn't seem to do that for me.
Love your posts of Pavarotti and Bocelli. Talk about gorgeous voices....
