[quote="Halo555" post=19694The questions are which speakers would you choose for the rear surrounds and for the heights and where would you position them ? I have not plans for 7.1.2 set up. I'm limiting myself to a 5.1.2 set up. I have some flexibility on where to position the ceiling speakers as it's a 1 story house with an open attic as long as it doesn't coincide with a beam or a light can.[/quote]

A 5.1.2 setup is great - if you wanted more channels, the 5.1.4 would be the suggested addition, not 7.1.2. Invisa 650's in a 12ft ceiling, located as you indicated and suggested by Dolby. will be perfect. Regarding HTR 7000's for rears, keep in mind to create the correct location cues the rear speakers would need to be at least 12' behind the main listening area.

Thanks Mr. Moderator Dude. You suggested "AT LEAST" 12ft back on the 10ft ceiling from listening position which is seated on the sofa. To be clear is this 12 ft back measuring straight on the floor or from ear level to ceiling (the hypotenuse) ? 12ft back along the floor coincides with the stools on one side of the kitchen island and some light cans on the ceiling. I have more open ceiling area about 10ft away. Would that be ok ? I could go back about 13 ft if measuring at an angle from the sweet spot. What width would I position the 7000s in relation to the front LR speakers which will be about 9ft apart ? Keep a 9ft width ?

Also I'm wondering if running 5 or 7 channel party mode on my receiver how would the 7000s sound in that case assuming people are standing around the kitchen island or seated at the dining table area ?

Seems like the 650s is the clear choice for the 2 height channels and based on Dolby schematics they pare positioned roughly the same width as the front LR speakers. If using 650s instead of the 7000s how far back from listening position would those go and how wide from each other ?

Measuring along the floor (the base of the triangle), at least 10' and 13' sounds better (I thought it was a 12' ceiling?). I like surround channel speakers that are behind me to be wide, at least as wide as the fronts, and angled in toward the center listening position.

No idea about party mode, but probably would be fine.

Would not suggest 650's for in-ceiling Surround application, if that's what you are asking. If you are asking about using them as Height channels, you can go with the Dolby recommendations for location.

Thanks again. Ok, so you're not a fan of the 650s for surrounds, preferring the 7000s. It's a 10ft ceiling where the surrounds would go which is the dining/kitchen area. It's a 12 ft ceiling where the height speakers would go which is the living/home theater area.

Not about being a fan, you can't have standard in-ceiling surrounds in a system with height channels. Non-height channels have to be at ear level (or appear to be coming from ear level, as in a properly configured HTR 7000 application).

OK, 10ft ceiling means they can be a bit closer - but 10' away is minimum for an 8' ceiling to achieve the correct geometry, the higher the ceiling, the further away they need to be from the listening area to achieve the desired result.

Ok, got it. Make sense to have the 7000s as rears if adding height speakers. Not as critical to utilize 7000s with just a 5.1 system but doesn't hurt either. Thanks.
