When I was younger (sigh), the ratings for audio wattage was all over the place. One learned (sometimes the very hard way) not to take wattage as a “universal” concept.

Let's move to today. I have two Aon 3 speakers that I use for front Left and Right sound. I listen thru an old and beautiful Marantz SR8300 (Yes, the amazing remote still works) in Stereo for music and 5.1 for video.

The Marantz is rated at 8 ohms 105 W x 4 channels.

The Aon 3s are rated at 10-250 W per channel.


I have never had my volume up more than -4 dB, I have no idea what that is on a 0-10 scale. It's quite filling in my listening room (14' x 16' area with two small, open adjacent rooms) at that setting.

However...

the speakers seem to beg for more (or is it me?) volume. I don't want to harm the speakers in any way but, can I proceed to go higher. As I remember the Marantz is quite clean turned way up.

By all means brother, give the Aon 3's what they want...watts.
Make sure the tone controls are in the neutral/off position...crank er up and have a blast.
Stop worrying about watts...if it sounds like crap when turned up, turn it down.
