On Dolby's official website 5.1.2 Overhead Speaker Placement the top-down image shows the height speakers in front of the couch roughly around where a coffee table would be. In the side view image, the height speakers are directly above the couch.

My couch and surround speakers are against the back wall. I'd like to know what the ideal placement for the height speakers are in a 5.1.2 setup as the 2 images from Dolby's website is misleading. Do I want them above me just slightly in front of my face? Or more forward where a coffee table in front of a couch would go? I have a swivel so I can tilt the speakers towards the couch.

I am using SuperSat 3C's for the height channels.

Thanks,

Slightly in front of the listening area is the preferred location.

Thanks for the response. I ended up setting up the height channels slightly in front of the listening position (about 3 feet in front). I also aimed them directly at the listening position and rotated them as if they are looking straight at you. Was rotating them inwards to face the listening position ideal? Or should they aim straight in the direction of the wall and only pointed slightly downwards?

In other words, is it ideal for the height speakers to only be tilted slightly downwards? Or have them both aimed slightly downwards AND rotated to look directly at the listening position.

Thanks again.

Sorry for the delay, stumbled across it in the No Replies folder.

Yes, aiming them towards the listening area is ideal. So, how does it sound?

It was worth the upgrade to Atmos. There is a ton of Dolby Atmos content out there now. Even for movies that only support 5.1/7.1, the option to expand to the height speakers improves the overall experience - especially for video games.

Expanding stereo music to all channels (front, rear, and above), is quite the listening experience. Its like being in a bubble of sound and you get a similar experience as listening to binaural audio using headphones.
