I’ve already had to replace the base on a triton 5 as the base for the spikes are loose and the speaker is not stable. And now the replacement has the same issue. The problem is the nut that is set in the wooden base plate is not in there tight enough and any little bit of adjusting of the speaker on carpet loosens it. This seems like a design flaw esp since it has happens on 2 separate plates and with multiple spikes. I don’t want to have to go thought warranty again as I think it’ll just happen again. Any thoughts on fixing this or securing these nuts in the base plate better. I have to say that for the money, GE should have made a more rock soild base plate.

Hi mtbin2.

I have no experience with the Triton fives, let alone the base.

I'd have to assume the base is similar for all of the Triton models, perhaps with the exception of the reference which uses a steel plate.

Forgetting the base for the moment here's a tip. Loose the spikes. There's a couple of schools of thought in that regard and I found out first hand just how detrimental, as in not advantageous at all, spikes are.

I'd suggest going back to the rubber feet.

If I understand you correctly your saying the base itself is defective in so far as the portion of the base that the spike or anything else for that matter would screw into is loose. So what you could do in that scenario is don't screw anything into the base. Purchase something like Gaia isolation pucks (or something similar) and set the base down on that. That should solve the stability problem.

Or if the carpet is low piled you could just set the base directly down on it.

Best.

Hey thanks for reply. The issue is I have thicker carpet and underlay padding which necessitates having spikes and the spikes on the Triton 5 base are too flimsy for it’s weight. Just the act of pushing the speaker down slowly to get the spike through the carpet and padding to the underlying concrete floor ends up loosening the nut. The metal nut that the spike itself screws into is not anchored in the base very solidly so the whole spike just ends up wobbly. I think what I’m going to do is make a custom metal base out of 1” thick steel. From there I’ll have to figure out where to get a set of solid beefy spikes.

Hi mtbin2, I'm sorry for the trouble you're experiencing with these Triton 5 bases. It's rare that we see the threaded inserts on the Triton towers' bases work loose. (All of the Triton towers have the same design with their threaded inserts - and spikes/feet.) If you'd like to obtain a replacement base, please contact the GoldenEar customer service group.
