I hooked up a new in room calibration unit called DDRC88a - Dirac Live.

While hooking up I had output very high and accidentally turned on speaker level test tones in AVR. And my Triton 5 was being driven by a 200 watt per channel Amp... The speaker tone started blaring so so loudly it scared my baby on other side of house. It took a second to turn off and I smellled an electronic smell from speaker. I

I was worried I damaged speaker so I pulled sock down. The woofers are in intact but I noticed the tweeter... They look like yellow plastic lines.. Well a few of the lines look smashed, flattened in a few small spots.

Do you think this could be result of overdriving speakers? The speaker is still playing fine. Although when I play music and put my ear next to it, it doesn't seem to hit the high notes quite the same as other speaker.

Do you think I ruined it?

It's been a while. Sounds like you are still tweaking your system. I've heard great things about Dirac. I may have to look up that DDRC88a...after you report back on how to use it and your results. Sorry you're having difficulties.

Can you add to this string what frequency the test tone was? I know tweeters don't have a high power handling capability. If you sent a pure 200 watt single, high frequency test tone through your T5s, that may be bad but I would think the crossover may mitigate that... This is definitely one for our Moderator but the frequency may be important. Good luck and please keep us posted.

DaveyMac, sounds like something your dealer will have to look at.
But we are all hoping with you that nothing serious has happened.
I run DIRAC with my Emo XMC-1 and REALLY like what it does.
BUT I never ran into that one, thank God!

A couple of years ago I went through the same experience. I was trying to use an Adcom GFA-555ll in bridged mono mode. Something went wrong and sent a piercing pitch signal through a Def Tech 2006 speaker. Pulled down the sock, and was immediately hit with the "burned smell" , the tweeter looked fine but midrange didn't. Popped out the midrange and took it down to the store where I bought it, and I'll never forget what they told me...Anthem, " Be kind to your Speakers", needless too say, they replaced everything free of charge and everything back to normal.

If you smell something "burnt" something is wrong.

If you smelled something burning, you damaged something. No way to know what if everything still works, so you'll probably need to have the speaker serviced.

The GoldenEar HVFR is incredibly robust, tolerating temperatures up to 350 degrees centigrade. They have proven to be fantastically dependable, but amazingly, we have seen a few burned up from "mistakes", as in your case, and from overdrive from mega-high power amplifiers. Fortunately, when they get burned up they turn black and don't work at all, so there is no mystery. There may be a point prior to turning black that the film is damaged, there should not be any visible physical imperfections in the folded film. If there is, as you describe, it is probably damaged and will need to be replaced by your dealer. The crossover should be inspected at the same time for any evidence of damage.

For those of you asking about Dirac Live, here is the link to review. I had Audyssey XT32 prior to this. You have to have a sep amp to use it. Words can't adequately describe how good it is. It is without question the best upgrade I've ever done. It's just that good. Puts YPAO, Audyssey, etc to shame.
