Does anyone know what the RMS built-in power of the Triton Two's are? The website says 1200 watts, but not sure that's RMS.

To add a bit more color, I found an article on the Force Field 5 subwoofer that has Sandy explaining the 1500watt rating is the halfway point between RMS and peak - www.hometheaterhifi.com/subwoofers/subwo...eview/all-pages.html

"The ForceField 5’s amplifier is described as a custom made digital amp rated at 1,500 watts of power. I asked GoldenEar co-founder Sandy Gross for a little more detail on the amplifier’s power rating and he indicated that the 1,500 watt number was halfway between the Peak to Peak (short burst) and RMS (continuous) power ratings.

Actual RMS power is 1,000 watts with the Peak to Peak number being 2,000 watts."

Sandy is always concerned about giving out specs that would cause people to think they can make a valid comparison and decision based on that spec. Nothing more misleading than RMS power when it comes to choosing a subwoofer. Output, extension and distortion are the real keys, and you'd have to get apples to apples testing to really compare.

For the techies in the group, RMS power is only half of the power equation, the efficiency of the driver is the other half, and remember a few dB in efficiency is a doubling (or halving) of power requirements. Also, RMS power, to be relevant, would have to be the actual RMS power delivered the the load (the driver), not some mysterious 8 ohm (or whatever) resistor used for testing. And of course box size and design type will be factors, in addition to actual RMS power and driver efficiency, in creating the actual output and extension of the system. Specs are dangerous when describing the performance of any piece of audio gear - almost guaranteed to be misleading - as we are yet to have specs that adequately describe what we hear. And of course there is no universal standard for how to make the various measurements, which makes apples to apples comparisons impossible.

But ... our engineers tell me that the Triton Two amp delivers just over 860 watts RMS to the driver array. :)

Well, that was quite a well written response - interesting, educational, and at the end, completely answered my question. Thanks

Seriously? After my diatribe on why it is unimportant/meaningless piece of information in terms of audio performance you still want to know? Wow ... I must not be a very effective communicator ... gotta work on that.

Somewhere north of 1300, I haven't got an exact spec for you.
