Hi,
First, let me preface the following by saying I have a solid understanding of multichannel audio and surround sound.
When setting up a discrete 5.1+ system in a rental property, sending signals to surround speakers is always an issue. In-wall wiring is simply not practical. Thus, installations often involve routing cables around baseboards and/or covering them with throw rugs. “Wireless†solutions are possible but there are issues related to audio quality, interference, and the need for AC power.
Late last year, Darryl Wilkinson reviewed the SuperCinema 3D Array Soundbar System for Home Theater. In addition to the standard 5.1 setup, he disconnected the surround speakers and listened to a downmix through just the SuperCinema 3D Array. His response was very positive using this configuration. So I started wondering how it might sound using separate LR fronts and the SuperCinema 3D Array for C, LS, and RS. In other words, sending 5.1 discrete audio to an “all front†speaker system.
I realize this setup would be highly unusual and have its own issues. But given Darryl Wilkinson’s review and the passive, interaural crosstalk cancelling design, using the SuperCinema 3D Array in this way might prove to be a viable alternative for some. Or not.
If money were no object, I would buy one and try it myself. So just out of curiosity, has anyone at GoldenEar ever set up the SuperCinema 3D Array this way? And if so, what was the result?
Thanks.
