I own a pair of Triton Two's. I'm in the market for a matching center channel. I'm confused-If the Hz cut-off for the center is 60-80hz and all bass is routed to the subs why is the new Supercenter XL that goes down to 36hz necessary? If all the speakers use the same tweeter why couldn't the center be the smallest Super Sat with the most power handling?
So much music-so little time!

Good questions. The more full range SuperCenter X and SuperCenter XL were designed to go with the Triton Sevens and the Aon bookshelf speakers, typically used with an outboard subwoofer in a typical 5.1 setup (with a default 80 Hz crossover, for maximum system efficiency and dynamic range). It can also be used in a system with a pair of Aons or Triton Sevens and NO subwoofer, with very good results in a smaller room. With the stereo-subwoofers-up-front in your Triton Two (and a Triton Three) system, there is no reason to play bass through the center and the smaller SuperSat satellite centers are perfect. You can certainly use a SuperSat 3 with a higher crossover point (say 150Hz), although most prefer to use the larger SuperSat 50C or 60C and a lower crossover point (say 100-120Hz).

That said, others in this forum will tell you they prefer more full range centers (there are many other posts on this topic), and some may prefer lower crossover points (all the way down to 40Hz os OK for the SuperCenter XL). At GoldenEar, Sandy is trying to make sure we have speakers in all the formats people (think they) want/need, within our limited line-up of affordable audiophile products.

Great information. Thanks moderator, and wweiss for starting this topic.

I currently have a pair of AON 3's for my front main speakers, I will be adding a supercenter XL for my center speaker. Eventually will be getting the triton 2 towers, but for now my setup will just be a 3.0 with AONS and a supercenter XL.

My question is, while I have this 3.0 setup, should I run all speakers full range? should I set a crossover of 40 or 50 hz for all speakers?
Main reason I am asking, is because when I watch movies at higher volumes with the 3.0 setup I do not want to damage the speakers by asking them to play lower frequencies they were not designed to do. Is there a risk of pushing the speakers past their limits if I do not set a crossover? My receiver is Anthem MRX 510.

Any information/suggestions is appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, run all as full range (I believe that will happen automatically if you set subwoofer to "None"). On a 3.0 system LFE is probably discarded. This setup is not a problem but there will be limitations as to how loud it will play (simple advice to avoid damage: just turn it down if it starts to sound strained). Adding a ForceField sub and an 80Hz-ish crossover would eliminate this.

When/if you run the Anthem ARC program, change the default frequency limit for correction from 5000 Hz to 500 Hz for best results.
