Good golfingff, (not sure how you came up the the name, but I know I say the f word a LOT when I am golfing!)

Again, I think you are well on the right track.
I would not hesitate with the 34 inch stands anywhere. Front, back, all around.
I know some like the rear speakers higher, and I have had them that way, even on the ceiling (and for movies that sounded fine).
But just my humble opinion, FWIW, I like them all the same height, all around me, gives a great surround sound for movies, but really shows its stuff on surround music and music concert blu-rays.

It really is a matter of personal choice, but with the Aon 2s I really do NOT think you can go wrong. They are wonderful speakers!!!!!

The sub should probably, theoretically go right in the front middle of the room, if you can. Most people can't put it there under the TV.
Corners give a boost, which you may not need, nor want, but then again you might.
Talk about sub crawl, funny BTW, here is a crazy idea I read once that kinda makes sense. They said IF you can, put the sub in your favorite, sweet spot listening position. And play a test tone through it, music with lots of bass would probably work too, and walk around the room listening to the place the bass sounds the best. Wherever that is, THAT is where you should put the sub.

I have never tried that, but IF you do and don't get committed to the looney bin, then tell me how it worked?

Enjoy, this hobby all about FUN.
God Bless,
Wayne

Haha funny comment re: golf ( I actually came up with the name because I am a firefighter and love golf :) ) That being said, I have also dropped a few f bombs for sure while out enjoying the challenging sport!

Thanks again for all the good advice. I am going to order enough stands to accomplish this positioning. I enjoy music and listen to it pretty much all day long while I am home. I really enjoy good concerts on blu ray as well. I am not sure that I could pull off the sub in front center but I am sure that I can come up with a spot near that which would work. I think I am going to actually try the idea that you talked of re: the sub placement. If my wife doesn't throw me in the looney bin, it will be worth it

I agree with Wayne. Positioning the speakers further apart will give you a larger sound stage. The use of stands will give you full flexibility in placement positions. The equilateral triangle is a great starting point. You will still want to play with it. In my opinion this is part of the fun of our hobby? Have a system tuning party. Invite friends over (keep it small), switch speaker placement, music types and rotate seating positions between you and your guests. Gather opinions, take notes and use tape on the floor to designate changes in speaker position. Even your friends that are not audiophiles will have fun with it!

Besides the wider sound stage and flexibility of moving the speakers out of the cabinet, there is another advantage. Even though they are called "bookshelf" speakers, speakers generally do not sound as good when they are confined. Even most floor standing speakers like to be away from walls, back walls and side walls. In my experience when you place speakers in a cabinet or bookshelf you loose the openness and airy quality of the highs and mids and the bass can sound muddy. In higher quality speakers (like GE's) you will notice this even more.

As strange as it sounds the "sub crawl" is a great technique for sub woofer placement. I have used it many times with great results. However, there is a risk of your wife having you committed during the process :woohoo:

Thanks for sharing your opinion as well on this. Makes sense what you are saying with re: to the speakers in a cabinet or tight to a wall or something. I will enjoy moving them around a bit and may even have a little party as you suggest. I thought of another question for you guys as well. I was wondering what the difference would be using 12ga speaker wire vs 14ga in this instance? I was thinking of using some 12ga for the front 3 speakers and 14ga for the surrounds, as that is what I purchased for them originally before I knew this forum existed with this wealth of knowledge? One last thing I was wondering is what the preferred way of connecting the speaker wire to the receiver and speakers? I bought 5 sets of banana plugs but I am starting to think maybe I needed 10 sets so that I could use them on both sides? Your help is greatly appreciated!

This is interesting guys, a golfing firefighter, I am not sure which one is harder to do?

MOBrien, good comments and I cannot believe you found a write up on my suggestion, nor how golfing hit the nail on the head with the name sub crawl. And your explanation of why it makes sense to move the Aons out of a bookshelf space was really well said. Makes us all sound smarter, or crazier than we really are!!!!

Golfingff friend, are you trying to start a fight? Mention of cables and even the connectors on the ends is enough to do just that on nearly any Stereo, HiFi, Home Theater, Audiophile forum. MERCY.

If that happens here I am getting outta this thread. For friendly advice, I will say that you need to let your own ears be your guide. IF you can hear a difference in cables, then for you there is a difference. And IF that difference is a better sound, and IF you can afford it without making your kids sleep out on the street, then go for it (them).

There are better cables out there than just cheap old Zipcord, IMHO. I use some that cost a bunch but not as much as a car. Ha ha
I will leave recommendations to others.
On connections, I guess bare wire connections are fine. Spades are fine. I often use banana plugs (many people say they are not that good, I can't hear any problem with them as the newer ones are locking or make a really strong, solid connection). Spades are great connections for hook it up and leave it alone. IF you are moving speakers, changing things up, moving to a new house, I like bananas. IF they hurt the sound quality, I cannot hear it.

I hope this helps, have fun with it. Remember, upgrading later is part of the fun!!!
God Bless, Wayne

Great post Wayne. Sorry guys, I didn't know that the wire/connectors topic was such a sensitive subject  I ended up getting some wire that was 12 ga, and what I felt was a good compromise of overall quality/price without breaking the bank. I am going to use some open screw type banana plugs for now. I am not even sure how much this will all affect sound/performance. I suppose my ear will be the ultimate judge here :) Everything is on the way now so I should have these babies hooked up within a short time. Can't wait to check them out!
