* 'Gimme Some Lovin' is part of the circulating setlist, so I've left it in, but it's only about a 45 second instrumental tease before Tina gets ahold of her mic and busts out 'Sweet Soul Music'.

This show is incredible, and a 'must have' for any and all soul freaks. I got it in a cdr trade not too long ago, and it had sbe's which I've repaired for this seeding. I also retracked it, and removed one tiny pop during the band intros.

With a foray to Toronto, The Who's 1982 tour rolls on, playing to an enormous crowd outdoors at CNE Stadium. It was John Entwistle’s birthday, and the band put on a show that Who’s News called “another great one for the Canadians.”

That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise: The Who loved playing in Toronto, the city in which it began or ended many a tour (including this one, with two shows at Maple Leaf Gardens, just two months after this). Moreover, in 1982, new music and a healthy, reinvigorated Pete Townshend propelled Who musicianship to great heights.

“One of the main strengths of the shows,” Jared wrote in Who’s News, “was the basic set being played. When’s the last time you went to see The Who and the show featured five new songs?” With “Athena” appearing in the encore, October 9 includes six.

Highlights include an enthused version of “The Quiet One” that leaves nothing in the tank. Elsewhere, Townshend distinguishes himself with deft and inspired guitar playing, making for strong versions of the songs from “Quadrophenia.” A three-song encore features “something of a Woodstock ending,” Jared wrote, akin to what appeared in the movie.

This master recording sounds very good: it’s fairly clear, close, and contains little in the way of interference from the audience. It was a windy day at CNE, so you’ll hear it in places, but it never distracts from the music. A tape change clips “Five-Fifteen” but a patch from ML’s master keeps it whole.

Once again, I salute my comrades: JEMS, BK, and mjk5510. They’re integral to getting the best of Jared’s Who tapes identified, conserved, mastered, and shared. There’s more to come.

Jared and Stan, of course, remain with us in spirit. Sharing another of Jared’s master tapes to mark the 40th anniversary of a tour he thought so highly of is an honor.

Share it freely, and for free!
