Three Dog Night
Rockefeller's
Houston, TX
Nov. 17, 1985
Soundboard recording
Another great torrent from Mexminute/TheCommish
(from the Mexminute archives)
In the late 60s and early 70s, very few artists enjoyed the popularity of Three Dog Night. The group charted twenty-one Top 40 hits in a little over a half decade.
In this particular show, twenty of the group's twenty-one Top 40 singles were played (only "Out In The Country"--which reached #15 on the charts--wasn't played).
For a group that enjoyed such immense popularity, it's dumbfounding that there aren't more Three Dog Night shows floating around, but let's at least be thankful for this one, as it's a beauty...and a must for anyone who likes Three Dog Night!
Setlist: (Billboard Top 40 positions noted parenthetically)
101. One Man Band (#19)
102. The Family Of Man (#12)
103. Black And White (#1)
104. Sure As I'm Sittin' Here (#16)
105. An Old Fashioned Love Song (#4)
106. Brand New Day
107. Til The World Ends (#32)
108. Play Something Sweet (Brickyard Blues) (#33)
109. Country song teases
110. Never Been To Spain (#5)
111. Liar (#7)
112. It Ain't Easy
201. Shambala (#3)
202. Pieces Of April (#19)
203. One (#1)
204. Let Me Serenade You (#17)
205. Easy To Be Hard (#4)
206. Try A Little Tenderness (#29)
207. The Show Must Go On (#4)
208. Mama Told Me (Not To Come) (#1)
209. Joy To The World (#1)
210. Eli's Coming (#10)
211. Celebrate (#15)
Lineage:
SBD > 1st gen cassette > CDR > EAC > WAV > Editing (below) > FLAC Frontend > FLAC
Editing notes:
Track 101: Reduced volume -4dB (0:13-0:28 mark--reduced announcer's band intro)
Track 102: Increased volume +2dB (from 0:19 mark until end of song)
Tracks 103-112 and Tracks 201-209: Increased volume +2dB
Leads vocals: Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, Chuck Negron (Yes, including Chuck!)
TheCommish notes:
Overall, a very nice-sounding show. The vocals are prominent in the mix, but you'd expect that for two reasons: (1) Three Dog Night is primarily a vocal-based act, and (2) the smaller venue meant the guitars didn't need additional amplification from the soundboard.
Per Wikipedia, Three Dog Night's 1985 spring/summer tour was postponed to allow Chuck Negron time to check into rehab to combat his recurring drug problem. As it turns out, Chuck suffered a relapse during the tour and was fired by the band in December 1985, a month after this show...and that was the last time all three lead vocalists performed together in Three Dog Night.
After cleaning up his act, Chuck approached Danny and Cory in the early 1990s about re-joining the group but due to various circumstances, a re-group never occurred.

Mahavishnu Orchestra 04/21/72
Emerson Gymnasium, Cleveland, OH
Case Western Reserve University
According to John McLaughlin, Columbia refused a live release of this show. John McLaughlin himself feels that this show in Cleveland is one of the best that the Mahavishnu Orchestra has ever done. As Irony would have it, Columbia asked their engineer and Gregg Bendian to assist with the release of this live CD. A mix was made and sent for approval to John McLaughlin. No word from Columbia since.
1. Meeting of the Spirits
2. You Know You Know
3. The Dance of Maya
4. The Noonward Race
John McLaughlin- guitar
Jan Hammer- keyboards
Jerry Goodman- violin
Rick Laird- bass
Billy Cobham drums
The concert billing was:
West Bruce and Laing
Procol Harum and
Mahavishnu Orchestra (as the opening act -- imagine that!)
