1980 11 13 (L)
Frank Zappa
Stanley Theatre
Philadelphia, PA
SBD 2nd (tranehead-Drew51-flambay-mudsharknyc)
PREAMBLE: This fantastic show is amongst the most common 1980 Fall Tour soundboard tapes to circulate and this FZ Shows entry serves an essential upgrade in preserving this fine historical document. Yes, many versions have appeared over the years here in FZ Shows and each have contained their share of flaws, but presented here is a very low generation clear upgrade to all other hitherto circulating versions. Overall SQ on this main source delivers improved definition with minimal hiss. For those interested in the FA comparisons, flaws discussion and preceding samples to this entry, please refer to the Samples thread.
FZ & the 1980 Fall Tour band certainly gave Pittsburgh an outstanding pair of shows and infinite thanks for this Late show main source tape provided by tranehead, which was originally seeded on Dime and Òfreshly ripped in 2010Ó to paraphrase the Dime entry. Additional patch, tape and bonus sources are provided by Drew51, also from a fresh NAK transfer as detailed below. Speed correction advice for both tapes by flambay.
Note: Both sources experience SBD SQ adjustments inherent from sources at the very beginning of the tape through approximately 18 seconds.
MAIN tranehead LINEAGE: 2nd gen. SBD > DAT(HEADS) list trade > CDR > flac > Dime > wav > Peak > speed correction, patching, editing & retracking > FLAC (level8)
THIS COPY: 92:00 min, SBD, A
THE BAND:
FZ, Ike Willis, Steve Vai, Ray White, Arthur Barrow, Vinnie Colaiuta, Tommy Mars, Bob Harris #2.
THE SHOW:
01 Black Napkins (5:39)
- contains (Drew51) choice replacement at the very beginning of the tape through 00:00:16.049, then switches to main (tranehead) source
02 You Are What You Is (4:00)
03 Love Of My Life (2:16)
- contains millisecond left channel drop out fix @ 00:01:37.6
04 Flakes (4:38)
05 Magic Fingers (2:22)
06 DonÕt Eat The Yellow Snow (2:09)
07 Stick It Out (3:19)
08 The Blue Light (4:13)
09 Easy Meat (6:01)
- contains tape flip cut from 00:02:41.6 to 00:02:42.9
10 Mudd Club (2:46)
11 The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing (3:09)
12 Bamboozled By Love (5:24)
- contains tape sides duplicate edit @ 00:01:55.2
13 Suicide Chump (5:55)
14 Jumbo Go Away (3:50)
15 If Only She Woulda (10:15)
- contains tape flip cut from 00:07:08.2 to 00:07:09.9
16 Drafted Again (2:52)
17 Encore Intro (0:45)
- contains (Drew51) patch 00:00:00.00 through 00:00:04.864, then switches to main source (tranehead)
18 JoeÕs Garage (2:14)
19 DancinÕ Fool (3:24)
20 Heavy Duty Judy Intro (0:21)
- millisecond fade out applied to tape cut @ 00:00:20.9
21 Heavy Duty Judy (4:20)
22 Illinois Enema Bandit (12:02)
Total time 92:00 min
THE FIXES HEREIN:
Speed correction of +40 cents performed for the entire main source tranehead tape.
Speed correction of +50 cents performed for the entire patch & bonus source Drew51 tape.
01 Black Napkins Ð
00:00:00.0 Drew51 has slightly more tape and replaces muffled inferior sounding beginning of tranehead tape
00:00:16.049 - switches to main tranehead tape
03 Love Of My Life Ð
A millisecond left channel drop out @ 00:01:37.6 was appropriated by duplicating a millisecond fill from the right channel of the recording.
12 Bamboozled By Love Ð
A tape sides duplicate edit was appropriated @ 00:01:55.2 where the tranehead source changes tape via fade out / fade in, duplicating a 0:41 second portion of the tape.
17 Encore Intro -
00:00:00.0 Drew51 tape has slightly more tape and hereby patches the tranehead tape through 00:00:04.864
20 Heavy Duty Judy Intro
Contains a millisecond fade out applied @ 00:00:20.9 to smoothen the tape cut
21 Heavy Duty Judy
Note that this tranehead tape has more tape than any other version IÕve heard over the years, starting slightly earlier from the DF guitar pattern preceding the start of Heavy Duty Judy.
TAPE FLIP NOTATIONS: Tape flip cuts on 09 Easy Meat & 15 If Only She Woulda were kept Ôas isÕ unchanged as provided from the tranehead tape, hence no fade-outs/fade-ins performed. So the tape flips heard on this FZ Shows entry matches those found on the original source.
All circulating SBD versions share the same tape cuts. No fills available for the tape flip cuts herein as no alternate audience source is known to date.
SUBFOLDERS INCLUDED HEREIN:
unpatched A tranehead main source
(all sound files interchangeable with the main FZ Shows entry)
01 Black Napkins (unpatched) (5:39)
- untouched with muffled tape beginning and slightly less tape at the beginning.
03 Love Of My Life (unpatched) (2:17)
- untouched with millisecond left channel drop out @ 1:37
17 Encore Intro (unpatched) (0:41)
- starts a few seconds later than the Drew51 tape.
unpatched B Drew51 patch bonus source
(all sound files interchangeable with the main FZ Shows entry)
01 Black Napkins (Drew51) (5:39)
21 Heavy Duty Judy (Drew 51) (4:19)
22 Illinois Enema Bandit (Drew 51) (11:59)
note: tracks 01, 21 & 22 of the Drew 51 source are provided here as they represent the superior portion of his tape. If you prefer the SQ on these versions, they are easily interchangeable to the main FZ Shows entry. All 3 tracks here are an essential inclusion to this great show!
DREW51 LINEAGE: low generation soundboard recording > Maxell XLII Cassette > Nakamichi CR-7A cassette deck > Tascam US-122L > Sound Forge Pro 10.0 (record/resample) > FLAC Level 8 > wav > Peak > speed correction & retracking
Transferred By: Drew51, 2011 09 28 - Drew51 ZRP/Zappateers Archives
CREDITS:
Thanks to FZ & the 1980 Fall Tour Band for a highly enjoyable performance
Thanks to the original liberators of the soundboard tapes used herewith
Thanks to tranehead for the main source tape contribution
Thanks to Drew51 for the NAK transfer and patch & bonus source tape contribution
Thanks to flambay for speed correction advice
