Budget restricted. Which between these two options would you choose?

Aon 2 + FF5 Sub

Aon3 + FF4 Sub

I realize both would be good, but which setup do you think would have the edge performance wise?

Rest of setup:
Onkyo Onkyo TX-NR638 (115 wp/c)
SSat3C Center and SSat3 Rears.

Hopefully a GE Mod will chime in here.

Thanks in advance.

Roman

Aon 2 and ForceField 5, no question. :)

One caveat, the SuperCenters are the centers suggested to go with the Aons. The SuperSat 3C (or 50C) are fine alternatives, but make sure to locate the sub in the front of the room, as close to center as possible, because the satellite centers need a higher crossover.

Will do. Thank you very much. I have read about sub placement in some of your other threads. I will be putting the sub directly next to the amp rack (on top of that is my Center Channel).

So looking at the following specs per other things I have read.

Main Speakers (Aon2) set on 30" stands, about a foot and a half to 2 feet out from the wall Toed in to listening position. Using Blu-Tack for mounting to quality (solid) stands and keeping vibration down. Cutoff at 60 - 80 Hz and Space between them equal to the distance of the seating distance from the wall.

Center - SSat 3C at Ear level - Cutoff 120Hz

Rear - SSat 3s higher up on the back wall. Cutoff 120Hz.

Sub - ForceField 5 close to the Center channel. Setup per your instructions I have seen here in the forums.
I just bought 2 100’ Rolls of MonoPrice 14Ga Wire and nice banana clips for the ends and a quality cable for the subwoofer connection.

Measure distances with a tape and enter the distances in the head unit.

Use Audio Tool SPL meter from listening position to set all speaker levels.

Is there any important pieces I am overlooking?
Do you have a solid “bang for the buck” recommendation for the Front Speaker Stands?

That looks perfect - novice you say? I don't think so :). Regarding the fronts, always favor distance between the speakers over distance from side walls, up to the distance you sit from the speakers, as you indicated.

Use the SPL meter as a staring point, it will probably not yield the results you want for sub level, so after using the meter set the sub level to taste. The sub is likely to get louder all by itself during break-in, so you may have to adjust a couple times . You may also wish to adjust center volume to taste - some prefer a bit more center for dialog intelligibility, others less for a bigger soundfield. Same for surround volume, you may find the SPL set level to be too much surround effect, or too little, for your room, preferences, and listening position.

Any 30"-ish speaker stand is fine, pick what the wife likes and then use damping material on the top plate and the back of the pillar(s). I have my Aon 2s on 32" stands that my wife thought were "stylish" - I put Dynamat on the top and the back of the post (these weren't fill-able), and they are a dead thud if you knock on them (they rang like a bell after assembly).

Make sure to run the system in for a good 50 hours or so to get things really singing.

Have fun, should be a great sounding system!

Roman, you are spot on! I purchased some inexpensive VTI VSP speaker stands that are 29" high and match the curves of the Triton bases. They are pretty solid but could have a little better fit and finish. I wish GET would start offering their own stands! Keep us posted on your progress and results.

Cheers,

T Cobe
