Hey Forum brothers & Moderator Dude, I need some troubleshooting help here.
I am having a frustrating time with my rear surround sound Triton 7s and their accompanying IQ M300 mono block Class D amps.
Remember when I had a small flooding problem in the home theater? I had a loud howling sound coming from one of my T7s and one of those amps? I FINALLY found out that came from a poor connection from the IC that was only loosely plugged into the amp input, I guess the center of the RCA was touching, but the outside was not. I FIXED this by having some ICs made with XLR connectors out of QED Reference audio 1 cable. I got this last time I was in S'pore. But just got around to installing them. Now playing that speaker, I think I can hear DAMAGE. I can hear that something is really not right in that Triton 7. It may have damaged the tweeter or one/both of the midranges. I need to check this out more but it sounds like a bad distortion.

THEN, with the balanced interconnects in, now I am getting a harsh sounding, sharp transient noise/pop in the OTHER T7 when my Marantz pre-processor is turned on and off!!! I have no idea what is causing this, do either of you have any ideas?
The amps were triggered on and off by a 12 V DC trigger on my Marantz. I removed that trigger wire. I turned on the amps by themselves, one at a time and neither one causes any noise. But with them on, when I turn on and off the processor (Marantz AV 7005) then it sends a loud pop to the left rear surround.
I am afraid this might damage my other, good speaker.
This did not happen with the non-balanced cables.
Any idea, suggestions?
I will do some more experimentation, I will have to haul the speakers out of the home theater to play regular music through them to see how they are. It is VERY difficult to tell how a speaker is working when it is only playing the rear surround track in a 7.1 DVD, hard to tell much from that.

You've got some electronics problem there, pops are almost always caused at the preamp side, but you can troubleshoot the amp by using different channels or a different amp for that channel.

When I hear about loud noises from electronics misbehaving and then speakers that sound distorted, I think damage. Run test tones, if the drivers have been damaged it will be obvious.

Hey guy...sorry to hear about your speakers. I had a similar problem a couple years ago. Tried to use an Adcom 2 channel amp as a monoblock, and it sent an excruciatingly loud high pitched signal to a Def Tech 2006...fried the midrange. Very rarely can a tweeter be damaged. The midrange was replaced "under warranty" ...no questions asked.

Short update here guys:

I did re-wire the T7s rear surrounds so that they are not getting any more pops, transients when I turn on and turn off my processor.
That seemed to be something gone wrong with my rear surround outputs from my processor, easier to just bypass that problem than to find out what it was and fix it.
But it is hot hot hot here, and I am lazy, I have not hauled the T7 out of the home theater and set it up where I can play some music and test tones through it to see if it is damaged. That takes energy and I have been putting more energy into a) fishing and b) resting from fishing.
But that is the next thing I have to try, as I still hear the damage in that speaker when rear movie stuff is played through it.

Well, I am slow but try to be sure. I am now sure, I have a messed up Triton 7 tower.
Now to get with my dealer. Arggghhhh, at times like this, wish he was not 10 hours away.
But he is great, I don't have any worries.
What I am not sure of is whether it is midranges or HVFR. I am thinking midranges (and both of them), just what my ears can detect.
Just a heads up out there, be careful of your connections, don't allow any loose ones.

Hey Wayne: I'll bet you my smooth jazz collection it's the midrange you've blown, they should smell burnt. I've never heard or seen a blown tweeter...anything is possible though. I had the same experience years ago, an Adcom amp malfunctioned and sent a piercing high pitch to a Def Tech, which in turn, blew out one of the midranges...scared the crap out of me.
A couple years ago I bought (still own it) a Paradigm Reference Signature C-5 center channel ($3200.00) I had 25 hours break-in on it and played Terminator 3 / Rise of the Machines. A bomb blast took out a bass/midrange and bass driver...the people at Paradigm said they had never heard of this problem before in the Signature line...first time for everything...they replaced both drivers.
