Since adding the Cambridge 851A to my system, when listening to music of all kinds, I have become increasingly pleased with the simple 2 channel sound produced by the Cambridge playing through just my Triton Ones and Sevens. Even though my two outboard subs remained active, I could not find a setting for their respective controls which added any real value to the low-end sounds.

Then, a little thought occurred to me. Since I really did not need my outboard subs in play when listening at normal loud room levels, why not find a way to have them active only when I am listening at very low volume levels - to restore the "disappearing bass" from the Tritons.

I decided to add one of my older Sony 5.1 Receivers back into the system. I connected the line-level audio output from the Cambridge to the Sony, then connected each sub to a separate line-level audio output on the Sony. Sending full line-level signals to the subs is not a problem because their internal crossovers take care of separating the bass signals.

Next, I adjusted the DAC sound level to produce a very low volume level in the room. Then, I boosted the outboard subs volume and crossover controls to provide distinct bass without any bloating.

This approach works well to provide audible bass with just enough "feel" to be satisfactory at the low volume setting.

When I return the overall volume to room-level, I simply turn the Sony Receiver off, so no sound emanates from the outboard subs.

Now, I have a good use for my two outboard subs.

Happy listening,

Art

A bit of further consideration has inspired me to alter this configuration. I have removed the older Sony AV Receiver. In it's place, I have added a simple stereo in-line control. The line output from my Cambridge is no connected to the stereo in-line control. The control is connected to the pair of subs.

This arrangement removes an unneeded sound processor and provides direct level control of the two outboard subs -- an elegant and simpler approach.

Happy listening,

Art

Hi Rick,

At the present time, almost all of my older devices are in retirement. My Onkyo 9.2 channel receiver died, but, even though it is over 4 years old, the failure is covered by a special Onkyo program. So, my Onkyo receiver is currently at Onkyo undergoing repair. I am using my older Denon 7.1 receiver as a temporary sub for my multi-channel setup. All of my other receivers, my 5 300-CD changers, etc. are sitting in retirement.

I am enjoying learning about streaming digital music and exploring ways to possibly improve the sound of my digital setup. And, listening to my music.

Best,

Art
