Hi, I'm considering upgrading my center channel from a SuperSat 50C to a 60C. Is it possible to rotate the 50C's tweeter to turn it into a vertical 50? I ask because I could get another SS50 and use them as a pair either in another room or to upgrade my rears or highs.

Current system (running as 11.1)

R/L: Triton 2
Center: SuperSat 50C
Wides: SuperSat 50
Surrounds: Martin Logan Motion FX dipoles
Rear Surrounds: Martin Logan Force 4 bookshelf
Highs: Martin Logan Force 2 bookshelf
Sub: Paradigm Studio Sub12

Triton2's set to full range, Paradigm Sub in back/center of room

Onkyo TX-NR3010 (as preamp, using powered channels for highs and rears)
Emotiva XPA 2 Gen 2 (R/L)
Emotiva XPA 5 Gen 2 (C/Surrounds/Wides)

thanks,
Brad
Living Room:
Triton 1 - R,L
SuperCenter XL - Center
Triton 2 - Surrounds
SuperSat 50 - Rear surrounds
Emotiva XMC-1 pre/pro
Emotiva XPA-1 G2 monoblocks, R/L/C,
Emotiva XPA-1L monoblocks: surrounds, rears

Home Office Office:
Triton 7 - R,L
Emotiva XPA1-L, Stealth DC-1 DAC

decided not to worry about it. I bought a SuperCenter XL and a 2nd SS50C. I'm now running the two SS50Cs as rear surrounds.

The SuperCenter XL is nothing short of spectacular. I though the SS50C sounded pretty damn good as a center, but the SuperCenter XL adds much more richness and depth than I expected. It really mates perfectly with the Triton2s giving just an amazing front facade. My dealer leaned me in the direction of the XL rather than the 60C and I'm really really glad he did. I was concerned the XL was physically too deep for the mantle on which the 50C was sitting. But it turns out that it sits and looks just fine there The XL is 11" deep, my mantle is 7". 1/2" is eaten up for banana plug clearance, so the XL has about 4.5" overhang. The weight distribution is fine, the XL isn't going anywhere, even with the overhang.

The SS50Cs as rears really are noticeably better than the Martin Logans too. In addition to being more efficient, they are significantly smoother in overall response. They don't have quite the bottom end of the MLs, but they don't need it given their role. I also kinda like the look of the horizontal orientation.

I may try swapping the ML Dipoles and the rear SS50Cs at some point just to hear the difference. But for now, I'm extremely pleased with this configuration.

So now my set up is:

R/L: Triton 2
Center: SuperCenter XL
Wides: SuperSat 50
Surrounds: Martin Logan Motion FX dipoles
Rear Surrounds: SuperSat 50C
Highs: Martin Logan Force 2 bookshelf
Sub: Paradigm Studio Sub12

Triton2's set to full range, Paradigm Sub in back/center of room

Onkyo TX-NR3010 (as preamp, using powered channels for highs and rears)
Emotiva XPA 2 Gen 2 (R/L)
Emotiva XPA 5 Gen 2 (C/Surrounds/Wides)
Living Room:
Triton 1 - R,L
SuperCenter XL - Center
Triton 2 - Surrounds
SuperSat 50 - Rear surrounds
Emotiva XMC-1 pre/pro
Emotiva XPA-1 G2 monoblocks, R/L/C,
Emotiva XPA-1L monoblocks: surrounds, rears

Home Office Office:
Triton 7 - R,L
Emotiva XPA1-L, Stealth DC-1 DAC

Thanks and agreed on the SuperCenter XL. :)

The SuperSats as surrounds/rears are magical when included in a full GoldenEar multi-channel system. I think it is the very wide, even dispersion that gives the wonderful blend between channels, filling the space without the "holes" we're so used to in multi-speaker setups.

Dipole surrounds are a product of the 80's, designed to enhance the matrixed "surround" channels of the stereo-to-5.1 ProLogic processor. No one should be buying Dipole surrounds with today's discreet 6 (or 8) channel audio if they want to hear the intended localization employed in today's multi-channel movie and music mixes.

OK, I took your cue and have done another round. I'm now running as a 9.1 setup, with the main 7 being all Goldenear. It is, as you said, magical. As expected, improved localization for R/L surrounds. In a nice surprise, ambient 'wrap' hasn't suffered at all w/o dipoles. The SS50Cs are terrific as surrounds, especially given their horizontal orientation. The sonic match all around now is fantastic. The Audessy room calibration blends them beautifully.

I originally thought that SS50s on stands would be overkill for rears, but they aren't at all. A lot more content gets pumped into them then I originally anticipated (thanks, no doubt to DTS Neo:X). Using SS50s as wides really didn't gain me much given my room configuration. I like them much better as rears and not bother with wides. Looks better too IMHO.

This setup is a keeper: (at least until the Triton Ones come out ;-)

R/L: Triton 2
Center: SuperCenter XL
Surrounds: SuperSat 50C
Rear Surrounds: SuperSat 50 (on Superstands)
Highs: Martin Logan Force 2 bookshelf
Sub: Paradigm Studio Sub12

Paradigm Sub in back/center of room

Onkyo TX-NR3010 (as preamp, using powered channels for highs)
Emotiva XPA 2 Gen 2 (R/L)
Emotiva XPA 5 Gen 2 (C/Surrounds/Rears)
Living Room:
Triton 1 - R,L
SuperCenter XL - Center
Triton 2 - Surrounds
SuperSat 50 - Rear surrounds
Emotiva XMC-1 pre/pro
Emotiva XPA-1 G2 monoblocks, R/L/C,
Emotiva XPA-1L monoblocks: surrounds, rears

Home Office Office:
Triton 7 - R,L
Emotiva XPA1-L, Stealth DC-1 DAC

Hi Bradorner,
Thanks a lot for that. Good one.
So you prefer the highs to the wides? Can you give us some idea of the difference? What does it sound like when using highs?
I assume you tried the wides VS the highs? And prefer the highs?
I too am running Triton 2s in front and have a sub in the rear. Have you had any problem integrating the rear sub? Did you run PBK on it? You seem to like what Audyssey did, can you describe any difference with Audyssey on VS off?
Any more info will be a big help, I too have the ability to go 11 channel or 9 channel, but not sure if it is worth the investment to me in my room?
Enjoy, sounds like an awesome system,
God Bless,
Wayne
