OK, that is Haitink conducting the BP and not the one I want to talk about today.
I LOVE the "Unfinished" Symphony by Franz Schubert, whether you number it 7, 8 or 9, I don't care.
You know the one, the unfinished one, with only the first two movements, usually numbered 8.
I have it on SACD with Bruno Walter and the New York Philharmonic and it sounds good. GREAT even, but that is becoz of the music IMHO, it is not a great recording nor performance in any way that I know. It is just AWESOME music.
I love this theme, I love the way the basses have it, the sweep and flow of the sweet melody and also the fiery parts, bombastic climaxes.
But my SACD is not hybrid, so I cannot make a copy I can play on my portable rig. AND I did not own a copy of Sym. #9 "the Great" by Schubert. So I found they are really hard to find on blu ray or SACD, in fact I could not. So I finally bought a new recording on CD by Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (one of THE BEST in the world IMHO). It is on DECCA and dated according to Amazon Feb. 2017, not sure that is right at all. There is almost NO info there, and no reviews either.
Honestly I would not be surprised to find out this is a re-issue of his 2002 recording of the Unfinished on Phillips. But that one did not have The Great Sym. on it.
I don't know. What I do know is that it sounds GREAT. Once again, nothing new here, nothing remarkable other than the genius of the music itself. I don't hear any revelation, or nuance, nothing extraordinary except just the wonder of the music itself.
Extremely competent play and recording. Someone might write a review tomorrow and say this is the best ever, or the worst, what do I know????
I love the music, and now I can hear it when I exercise. That was the point. AND I get to hear the Great sym. too.
Recommended, but mostly if you don't already have a good copy of this marvelous music.
God bless, Wayne
P.S. Finally found a date for this CD 1976, even older than I thought.
