Now, for some more Raleigh musings. I took yet another look at the Den in the Raleigh house and realized that there is no place for my Triton Sevens as "B" speakers in the rear of the room. My PLP recliner will be at the rear of the room, sitting in an opening between the rear of the den and the kitchen eat-in area.

So, I will probably be limited to a "2.2 stereo" music configuration. My Triton Ones will be in the front of the room and I will connect their subs to the audio preamp output on my Cambridge 851A Amp. I will find a place on a side wall for my Paradigm DSP 3400 Sub and connect it to the Record Line Out on the Cambridge 851A. I will energize the Paradigm only when playing at lower overall music volumes.

To simulate this arrangement in my current location, I have turned the "B" speakers off, so my Rear Triton Sevens are silent.

I don't yet know what I will do for movie surround sound in the Raleigh Den. Most likely it will be a 5.1 system - possibly 7.1. As is the case here, movie sound will not be nearly as important as music in my setup and the movie system will be separate from the music setup.

Since nothing is settled yet, all of this configuration conflab remains speculative.

I had a little "A HA" moment yesterday while listening to a digital remastering of an older analog classical recording. I was listening at a higher volume setting and I noticed significant tape rumble on one of the tracks. So, I experimented with various connection options and quickly determined that driving my Triton Ones' LFE inputs with the Preamp Output from my Cambridge was a significant contributor to making this tape rumble audible.

I have a number of favorite recordings in my classical collection which are digital remasterings of older analog recordings. Therefore, I decided to change my setup to minimize potential tape rumble. I removed the LFE connections to my Triton Ones and re-set the Ones' LFE controls to about the "1:30 PM" position. I connected the Cambridge Preamp Output to my Paradigm Sub for augmented low-volume bass and reset the Paradigm's Frequency Cutoff and Level Controls to their "12:00" positions.

I am now listening to a number of recordings to check out these settings.

Still listening to my T Ones with no external LFE connections. Plenty of natural bass at my normal listening level with the LFE controls set to the "1:00 PM" position.

Now, I am experimenting with my Paradigm DSP 3400 Sub and considering adding in my Klipsch 12 inch sub. Here are my considerations for these experiments:

I am driving the Paradigm from the unbalanced audio output on my DAC Magic Plus.

The Paradigm is a 15 inch sub which goes very deeply into the bass region. It has three continuous controls (phase, cutoff frequency, and level). If I set the cutoff frequency control to just above it's lowest setting and then slightly boost the level control from its lowest setting, the result is an audible "deepening" of the overall bass response at my PLP. This effect is noticeable even at low volume listening.

So, now I am thinking about using the Paradigm to deepen the bass for all my listening, regardless of listening volume level. Then, I am considering bringing a second cable from my Cambridge Record Output to my Klipsch and setting up the Klipsch to augment the overall bass when I am listening at low volume levels.

Since I am also using my Klipsch with my separate movie sound system, I will be connecting the Klipsch to both systems via a split cable. I don't anticipate any issues with this dual-connection approach because I do not operate the music system and the movie system at the same time.

I'll report the results.

Updates:

1. Medical -- All heart tests returned normal results. Hernia surgery is now rescheduled for November 29.

2. Audio -- I have reconfigured to bring my Klipsch 12" Sub into the audio system (as well as having it remain in the AV System for movies). The Klipsch is connected to the "Record Out" fixed level output on my Cambridge 851A Stereo Amp. The Paradigm Sub remains connected to the unbalanced output on my Cambridge DAC.

I have moved my remote shutoff switch from the Paradigm to the Klipsch. I have the Klipsch adjusted to provide augmented low bass at a level to add bass when I am listening at low overall volume. The Klipsch is turned off when I am listening at normal room volume.

The Paradigm sub is now active at all listening levels. I have it adjusted to augment the low bass to add just a bit of depth to the bass produced by the Triton Ones.

When I am watching a movie or TV and using the separate AV system, only the Klipsch sub is active. There is ample LFE bass for our tastes in videos.

Just a suggestion, doubt you will like it, but just for grins, and to keep life simple for your new digs, why not try just one system for music and movies????

Hi Wayne,

Yes, I do have limited space available in the potential new digs in Raleigh. But, I really like having two separate systems because I enjoy the setup flexibility afforded by separate systems. My almost overwhelming interest is in music, so I will always emphasize music in any AV setup. Having separate systems allows me to customize both my audio and AV setup.

I am working out the logistics of maintaining a two-system approach.

We will probably know definitively about this situation by mid-November.
