I have been thinking about changing my surround speaker setup. Currently I have a 7.2.4 setup as follows:

Mains- Triton Ones
Centre channel-Super Centre XL
Side surrounds=Supersat 50's
back surrounds-Supersats 50's
Atmos-HTR 7000's

The rear/side surrounds are above seated ear level so hard to get clean atmos sound from above as it is mixed with audio from surrounds so I was thinking about replacing wall mounted surrounds with 2 Triton Ones surrounds. So my setup would be 5.2.4. Due to budget & space issues can only manage 2 Tritons.

Benefits would be 4 subs vs 2
Better seperation between atmos & surrounds as Tritons would be on the floor vs wall mounted.
Better tiber matched as mains & rears would be matched.

Wondering if there is any downside other then giving up 2 surround speakers & of course having to invest in to more Triton Ones?

Appreciate any input

Hey Dwight,
That should sound super wonderful awesome!!!!!
Go for it man!!!!!
I have the TOnes in front and T 2s as side surrounds and T 3s in the rear and honestly the rear speakers do not add much most of the time. You will be gaining far more than you are losing. IMHO.
Let us know what you do, but I say go for it. Course you could add TRefs in front and move the TOnes to surround, that is what Rick has, and I know he loves his setup, what is not to love?
God Bless,
Wayne

Hi, Dwight

I'll bet you'll love the Triton 1's as surrounds!!!! Not only do you get in effect 2 extra subs for great bass distribution, but the added heft from full range surrounds can really make a difference, especially if you have no rear sub. When action in HT is all around, it literally IS all around, and even with music Blu-rays, it is a room filling experience. Yes, I love T1 surrounds!

Thanks Wayne
I thought about TRefs but don't have the budget for them. So you have confirmed my thoughts on the matter. One concern I have with the 2 extra subs would be setup as they would not be equidistant from mlp as the main TOnes. The existing TOnes are about 12 feet from MLP. If I add 2 TOnes they would be about 8 ft behind MLP. I could split LFE between my TOnes up front ie treat them as one sub & split LFE on new TOnes. Does this sound ok?

Hey Rick

Yes I do not have rear subs so big improvement for sure. Also should help with 4 HTR 7000 Atmos audio up above. ie better separation as there would be no other speakers near Atmos setup.

Hi, Dwight

Wayne may wish to answer also...but thought I'd chime in. From your question, you must have 2 sub outs? My set up is exactly as you describe, I.E. sub out 1 is split to the fronts and separately set for gain and distance, and sub out 2 is split to the surrounds and also separately set for gain and distance. Works great, and I can dial in the relative effects and SL of front and rear subs.

Hope this helps.

Rick
