"Muddy" is the effect of too much volume, caused by the boundary gain from the corner placement. This additional volume can be compensated for by turning down the powered bass section level control on each speaker. Although not a perfect inverse (a good room correction system will do that better), it will deal pretty darn well with compensating for the boundary gain.

And Wayne, don't sell yourself short, your advice has been spot on (although albeit a bit slanted by your "taste for bass"). :)
