Something is wrong in your setup if the SuperSat 50's sound bad on music. Properly setup with a couple subs they sound very much like a pair of Triton Twos. I've heard many 2.1 systems with SuperSat 50s that were spectacular, including ones I have had setup in my 2ch listening room at home.

Hey all, checking back in to give an update.

I've struggled since my purchase to get my Triton 1s to work well for both music and home theater.

Running just speaker level connections to the T1s resulted in a lack of bass for home theater (yes I set subwoofer to none in my processor and my bona fides in this area includes over 20 years on the hobby, building my own speakers, subwoofers, and even an amplifier, proficiency with parametric EQs and REW, and more. I'm also not remotely a bass head.)

Running speaker level connections and LFE into the T1s resulted in a constant battle with the gain knob in order to have it set correctly for 2ch full range without it being so hot that the processor's calibration routine would fail. This was the case with both an Onkyo AVR and my current Anthem AVM 60.

I tried running the T1s in concert with a large ported sub from a respected manufacturer . This gave the best results (until recently) but required a lot of jumping through hoops to get everything calibrated. I know that running multiple subwoofers is the most effective way for taming room modes (far more effective than EQ if you can do it) so my goal was to utilize the inbuilt subwoofers in the T1s and the large ported subwoofer to give me LFE coming from three location to smooth out room modes. Like I said it was partly effective but I've had better bass in my room with much lower end gear.

I finally (just in the last month) determined that I needed to just do an experiment and run multiple subwoofers in my room without the Tritons doing any LFE duty. I still have them set to full range but they are getting speaker level input only. I took advantage of SVS's generous trial period and return policy and orderd FOUR sealed SB-2000 subwoofers from them. I placed two on the front wall between each Triton and my rack and two in line with my front row of seating which is somewhere near the 1/2 to 2/3 mark of the room.

My system CRUSHES. It is the best home theater experience I've ever had. It is like a mini IMAX in my home. The quality of bass is stunning and it has added a level of dynamics to my soundtracks that was missing and I didn't even know it. I've done nothing different or special from a setup perspective than what I was doing before nor any different from how I calibrated and configured things with previous setups including an all Klipsch setup, Mirage, Phase Technology, Paradigm and other setups I've owned in the past. I'm not running my bass hot, I've quadruple checked my settings and results.

NONE of this is a criticism of the Triton 1s. I know there are people here who are running them in all the configurations I tried and are happy. I know Sandy has run things in multiple different setups and is happy. I'm a smart guy with tons of experience in this hobby. I'm not "cofounded or founded 3 companies and designed speakers" smart but I know what I'm doing.

NONE of this is a criticism of the people here or elsewhere who run their Tritons in one of the the configurations that failed for me and are happy with it.

I post this update because I KNOW from reading here and on AVS forum that I'm not the only person that has struggled using the T1s for LFE with or without another subwoofer. If you are struggling, you're not alone. Maybe its your room, maybe its your accompanying gear, maybe its your expectations based on past systems that seemed to work better for you. It really doesn't matter but I guess don't walk away thinking everyone else figured out how to make it work but you.

If anyone is interested in how I got my final setup I made a series of youtube videos. I won't post the link unless someone is interested or you can probably find them on your own.

Good report CJ, good for you, well done!!!!
Nicely written I might add.
I too find the struggle for real bass (and I am a bass head) is a tough one, I run LFE to my TOnes in the front, my T 2s on the backside (surrounds) for 4 layers of bass, but still added a big, good subwoofer in the rear of the room and now I am experiencing something like you are talking about. Yours is probably better but I am HAPPY.
Rooms are a hard one to call and make huge differences.
Glad you got there and reported back, good to hear from you again.
Happy listening,
God Bless,
Wayne

As a follow up, I have the Ones as my front mains along with the XXL as the center channel and 4 MPXs in the surround and back positions. I use the One as the powered subs for the LFE without use of an additional subwoofer. In the AVM60, there isn't a configuration for speaker size, there is simply the crossover for each of the speakers (LFE Subwoofer, Front, Center, Surround, Back, Height 1 and Height 2. What I am looking for guidance is the optimal setting for the Subwoofer and Front crossovers. More specifically, it has been recommended to use 120Hz for the subwoofer and then turn off the crossover for the Front (attached is a screen shot from my AVM60, in the Bass Management configuration window). Is that how you have yours setup? Thanks, Chazman.

There should be no front crossover. LP for LFE should be 120Hz.

These are all likely room issues and the solving of them is entirely specific to the room. It is not a question of what Sandy likes, it is a question of what makes the speaker perform as designed and that has been outlined in the manuals and the support documents we offer, like Sandy's Setup Tips. We demo them accordingly, reviewers review them accordingly, and the results are self evident. Whatever issue you or others are having it is related to room or perhaps gear, and everyone will reach the solution they feel is best in their own way. That said, GoldenEar is not going to endorse any setup other than the one we know is correct. Some may take a different route and that's all fine, but we are not going to condone or suggest others do the same.
